Hello I just bought a Snap on 1750 at a garage sale.It is from 1989 It is in great shape and has brand new jaws. I stripped all the old paint off of it till it was bare, then used 600 grit sandpaper and wet sanded it till it was clean. After drying it for a entire day I put on 2 coats of industrial grey primer, then 2 coats of high grade spray Automotive paint (snap on red) Im thinking about selling it and had a figure in my head, but wanted some advice from you guys.

1) the paint doesnt seem to be that durable and most likley flake off. could I get more money for it if I stripped it down again and had it powdercoated?

2) I could then put brand new snap on tool box plastic emblems on it

3)How much do you think its worth now, and how much if its powdercoated with the new emblems?
Any and all advice will be apreciated:) thanks in advance!!

I have the same vise:

regarding the paint, it's still good as new. paint likes 3 things: clean, dry and heat. while clean and dry are simple enough, but many people don't understand the heat. before you paint the first coat of primer, use a propane torch or OA rosebud to heat up the bare metal parts, don't need to be red hot, 250* is a good number. it does 2 things, first, it bakes out the moisture and residual oil in the cast iron pores. 2nd, when the paint vapor hits the hot metal, it got sucked in to the pores and forming a good bond, at the same time the thinner evaporates almost instantly.

IIRC, it's a $400 from Snap On, $200+ from Wilton, so $75-100 would be fair price, to me.

Wire wheels are fine to strip off the old paint, but if you really want to get down to bare metal I like to bead blast (I'm too impatient for the electrolysis process). I then wipe it down with acetone and let it sit in the sun a bit to make sure it's really dry (95F ambient, no telling how hot the vise gets sitting in the sun)...

I like the Rustoleum "Enamel" paints. They give a good durable finish. Sometimes I primer them, sometimes I don't. I usually only do a primer (white) when I want a color to really "pop" a little brighter.

Honestly, you probably won't get a penny more spending the extra time & money stripping it and getting it powder coated. As long as there isn't any rust and you have oiled / greased it, and the paint is in decent shape it's all the same.

I too think $75 - $100 is a very reasonable price. Though if you stick it on eBay and add the word "Wilton" in there you *might* be able to get more.
