Owner says it's 62 lbs and has seen little use and is in very good shape. I'm not looking to squeeze him, just want to know what a fair price would be. Does a Starrett branding mean anything on an Athol?

Jaw width is 4 1/2". Thanks everyone.

My neighbor has sold a few for about $150 each.

Thanks for the replies guys.

ZRX, I'm curious-- were the ones your neighbor sold in mint condition or ok shape, and were they Athols? I'm trying to get a feel for this one and whether $75 would be a fair price.

He sold me an unrestored one for $40, which I also later sold for $150 after resto. He had/has both Athol & Starrett versions. Restored they were $150.

I'd probably pay $75 for that if I had to have it.

I'd say $50 and below is a great deal. $75 fair. $100 if you want it. Above $125 should be in really excellent shape, restored. Make sure the jaws are good, no cracks, and that it opens and closes well.

I know we tend to go by $/lb here, but I'm finding that vises tend to sell more on jaw width with a bonus on the "bulk" or "mass" of the jaws. It's just plain difficult to get someone to tell you how much a vise weighs. I've got 4 machinist vises, one utility vise, and I have no idea how much any of them weigh.

dollar per pound is unrealistic in many/most markets. To get one today would cost you over 400. If in good shape with no repairs then 150 is a fair price. You have to remember you are getting something better than anything that can be purchased today at a fraction of the cost.

We have 2 of those vises at my work. Very well built, and they are tight and nicely machined. For $75 bucks that thing would be bolted to my bench already. As mrmark said the money per pound isnt a good way to price vises anymore. You flat out cant buy something like that anymore for probably under $500 new, so to me $75 is a steal.

Here are some pics of it after I got her home. The seller said it's 62 lbs and I felt every one of them carrying it. This thing is a solid chunk of metal. A little cleanup and she should be looking good. Tempted to repaint it but I'm trying to figure out what kind of spatter paint they used.

Anyone know if the 924 was a fixed or swivel base?

It looks like a fixed base, because of the hole patten on the base.

How were your negotiating skills? ;)

Larry, if you got that vise for $150-ish, in that condition, just needing a bit of cleaning and oiling, you did well. (yes, some of the folks here got heavy vises at estate or garage sales for free, or $10, whatever, primarily for hauling them away from people who didn't want or need such a tool........but thats 'luck', not 'fair market')

That model of vise is 'mil-spec', some number of them would have been bought by the government, and the last list price from Starretts was........well, I can't remember, but they were a rather seriously expensive item.

You've gotten yourself a very high quality vise, by the way.

The production of that late pattern vise line was contracted out to a well-known specialist foundry, by the Starrett Co.........it wouldn't be polite to mention his name, as a privacy issue, but I was told about this by the man in charge of the facility where your vise was built.......he said that they were a bit cautious, as the Starrett dwgs called for rather thin section in some areas, so they used a very high quality, high-strength malleable iron for the castings. You'll notice the relatively thin section in the front jaw, and the 'horn' area which supports the front jaw.

Note that the area behind the back jaw appears to be meant for use as an anvil surface......it should not be used as one.

Its true enough that that surface could be used for, say, very light rivetting of small sheet metal parts or similar......but using it so sets a bad example for shop helpers, who will eventually try to use the vise as an anvil, and crack the casting at that point. On the few I've ever refinished, I'd have my helper round over that surface into a nice radius, which would be painted along with the rest of the casting.

cheers

Carla

Good to know, thanks!

Oh, I didn't push-- got it for $70 and I'm not complaining. Neat old guy I purchased it from, he's a retired 3M engineer and a tinkerer-- showed me his steam powered bicycle in his back shed.

He sold this vise for a friend who is paying off some legal fees from his brother's estate (the vise being part of it) which is why I didn't want to dicker. Going from $99 to $70 was enough for me, just to cover the 75 mile drive each way. Coastal highway, so it was a pleasant trip.

So why even bother mentioning it? It's a vise, not some life or death drama...:wtf:

Nice vise and a pretty good price. Yeah, there are a few wackos here who think vises are worth their weight in gold. But in real life they are few and far between. Lots of way overpriced vises easy to find waiting for those types...but nice deals on good vises are not too hard to find with a little effort and patience. Also, they are worth the wait!

Starrett Athol made great vises. that one is a combination machines vise (has the pipe jaw) probably later production as Starrtt use the Athol name for quite a while after the acquisition of Athol.

BTW 11" seems high. For safe opening measurement, CLOSE the vise and measure how much slide is sticking out. That way you have the slide fully engaged at that opening.
