My first 6" Record, probably from the sixties had closed in mounting holes and its replacement from the early eighties had the open style. Both were made in England.

Around 1972, I saw my first Record hanging out of a garbage barrel at a garage I used to hang out at, when I was bored. I took it and got it welded (Front jaw). That lasted about ten years, then I looked for a new jaw. One place I checked out was PAL as they then sold them. One friendly employee told me they offered a lifetime guarantee, even after explaining the history, he said "bring it in". That's how I got my present vise. Not likely to be that lucky today.

boy that sure looks like a rebranded American Scale

Sent from my SM-G900T using Tapatalk

I agree except for the handle on the lock downs. A Scale pinches the end of the bar, Morgans put small round knob. American scale has a larger handle support (The Meatball) and they pin the handle support instead of friction welding. The casting and swivel jaw sure looks the same though.

Anchor. 5" jaws? Could this vise have been built by Anthol/Starrett?

KMScott...Very interesting vise. I found a posting by bl00 with pertinent information.

Now about this retirement talk. I believe you're really going to South Carolina to semi-retire, right? You'll stay busy restoring vises of your choice at your leisure, maybe even work on a few members vises.

I may be selfish, but I'm not greedy.

Thanks Fier, I knew you would rescue me.

I have lived in the Mountains for most my life and love the Ocean. South Carolina in the Winter and back here in Colorado for the Summer is my dream. Now if I can talk my wife into it.

Desmond Stephan 43SJ. (Simplex) 4-3/4 jaws.

KMScott...Some specs for the Desmond Stephan swivel jaws.

Excellent description of injection molding powdered metal. I'm sure you could teach a course. I've spent many years in many injection molding companies in the Chicagoland area. While most injected only plastic, the few that injected metal all complained of brittle parts that were a compromise to a machined steel part.

I also remember many Tool & Die guys who would have no say in a mold built in China, but were expected to maintain and make the repairs to an inferior product. Really glad to see that trend has been reversing in recent years. I'm seeing Tool & Die apprenticeship programs for the first time in a long time.

Good stuff!

Thanks Fierljeppen, sure bail me out. Yes the Metal Molds I built were for sewing machines, very intricate parts and hard to build raw. I enjoyed making molds till China took over and closed my shop in 2000. Making jaws is kind of my last stand and a lot easier then making molds. Miss the molds and make Parker jaws to keep me happy. No Parker jaws for customers though.

Woden 190/8A. 6" jaws that opens to 7" and weights 84lbs. Here is a note from a person that mentions what the 190 means.

The first part of the number gives the 'quality' of the vice, I believe 190 was the top of the range. Below that were the 186B, 186E and 186S. You could get the 186E with a 10" jaw weighing 204lb.

Reed 106. 6" jaws that opens to 10" and weights 140lbs. This vise is mine and I replaced the cast in jaws with a replaceable set. Added a new handle and tightened up the backlash.
