Stumped again, not a clue. The casted patent date was no help at all. It's a very interesting vise with unique features, but I've never seen anything like that vise in a photo or printed data. It doesn't look like a Lewis Tool vise to me though.

Hoping someone can shed some light on this one.
Looks like it was posted prior, thought to be a Lewis then too. Don’t see any follow up posts on that same page

Another one not in DATAMP.

I didn't see this onr in the spreadsheet (I was getting info for WrenchGuy...) I got this in trade a complicated trade from Shift.

1" jaw (1.019) - 1.082 opening. Actual weight: 6 oz (despite the catalog page...)

Only markings are "Pat. Appld For" so a Pre-Patent Colton, and pretty early - A fair amount of Japanning is still on it:

Posting a vise with a quarter filling the jaws. Nice showing off!

Make sure you don’t drop the vise on the floor, it might disappear.

found this today. thought it was one of the older Craftsman/Dunlap homeowner grade vises at first until i read the lettering. I've never found a trade school vise before so it had to come home with me.

University of Toledo vise
3.5" jaws, opens 3", weight 21 lbs.

Saw this for sale. I didn't go for it, he was asking $150, but nice vise which I do not see on the spreadsheet. It is listed as being 4" jaws. The guy also says that Morgan became Milwaukee(?). Morgan exists to this day, if they got rid of open screw vises, then maybe it is possible that Milwaukee Tool may have bought that part; no relation to today's Milwaukee tools

**** Below the vise on some pics, you can see a catalog page with info...even if I enlarge it, I can't make out what it says. I know some guys are good at tweaking enlarged pics to better see what it says. And it may not have any new relevant info, or maybe there is something new.

This one is already on the spreadsheet, just found it interesting that 1) the bottom is hollowed out as much as it is and 2) that many of the early Canadian vises were copies of Records, this one has London cast into it. Looks like the didn't just copy it but had it made by Record and put their name "Henry" on it. I was hoping someone could make out what is written on the inside of the hollowed out section.

FMC - Henry vises were made in London, Ontario. Their brand was called Craftools. So it was "Made in Canada". Typically that is part of the wording on the other side of the fixed tower. Lots of influence from England in Canadian vises. Another interesting fact is that the nut on these vises were part of the main casting. There is no pin holding in a dovetail nut on these vises. Here is a photo of a Henry 3 I refurbished back in January showing the bottom and a side view showing "Made in Canada".

I see...said the blind man. I know of London, Ontario....but when I saw London, I immediately thought of England :headscrat

Humphrey's & Son. 6-1/2" jaws.

Note from the owner.
"Humphrey's & Son, Joliet Illinois. 6-1/2" jaw width, 12" tall, 27" long. Found a little information on the company but nothing relating to vises. Founded 1861 as a foundry and blacksmith shop."

An addendum for the very rare and interesting "Humphrey & Son's" vise.

A 1904 catalog scan and some photos from GJ "Bear4".

jaws.......6-1/2"
weight...175 lbs.

1904_walter_a_zelnicker_supply_co_pg.137.jpg humphrey_and_sons_vise-1_Bear4.jpg humphrey_and_sons_vise-2_Bear4.jpg

Horace Humphrey, fourth generation from Holland, founded the Joliet, IL foundry company in 1861. His son, Harold worked with him and finally succeeded him in the 1890's.

1900_genealogical_and_biographical_record_of_will_county.jpg

It was Harold who manufactured the bench and solid box vises, but "Humphrey & Son's" were most famous for their green bone & vegetable cutter at that time

humphrey_and_sons_bone_crusher.jpg 1901_01-31_the_iron_age_pg.63.jpg

Harold B. Humphrey was a prominent figure in the Joliet community and held many patents for his foundry and manufacturing company.

1900_the_poultry_keeper.jpg

In 1910, "Humphrey & Son's" among many other companies, nationwide, were in battle with the unions. In late October, Harold B. Humphrey was escorting his employees home when he was ambushed and shot by a mob of local striking union members. He would later die on November 14, 1910 of his wounds. Although the outcry was great for the capture of his assailants, it is unclear if justice was ever served.

1910_11-03_the_iron_trade_review_v.47_pg.828.jpg 1910_11-24_the_iron_trade_review_v.47_pg.952.jpg

"Humphreys & Son's" would continue in business, at the same address in Joliet, IL at least into the 1990's and possibly further. They had a good run, better than most.

RAE 3-1/2. Made in Canada. Weighs 20 lbs. 3.5" wide jaws. Opens to 3-7/8 (per the amount of rail behind the fixed jaw tower when closed). No anvil, no pipe jaws. Replaceable jaw inserts. Stationary. No swivel jaw. These are original photos of an older RAE 3-1/2, likely made in Hamilton, Ontario. The "AE" in RAE is smaller than the "R" and it has no location marked on it.
Missing completely from the spread sheet.

Also, there are two line items for the RAE 40S (4 inch RAE with a swivel). Lines 2958 and 2938. Should delete 2938 and move reference page to 2958.

RAE W4. Made in Orillia, Ontario. Never seen one from Hamilton. Exposed screw vise. Not on the spreadsheet. I don't know the weight or how wide it opened as I sold it.
3.5" wide jaws. anvil and horn, replaceable jaws, built in pipe jaws, swivel base. The Oval-D mark was used by Orillia, not Hamilton. I have seen two others with a label on the front indicating OTACO, which was the company in Orillia that built them.

I noticed that the spreadsheet has no columns in the Brochure tab for Dawn or Yost. I also noticed that most of the Dawn pictures in the spreadsheet tab are of catalog pages. (I appreciate what everybody has done to create this. It is a great resource. Just pointing it out.)
I bought a Dawn 6SP vise. You have a couple of pics of one already. Perhaps these might be better for the spreadsheet.
I measure 6" jaws, 7-3/4 opening per your definition. Mine weighs 69 lbs. No pipe jaws, no swivel, no swivel jaw, replaceable jaws. Mine came with Record soft jaws also. Made in Australia.

Not my vise, but the link for the Parker 436 in the visespreadsheet has dead pix, so maybe this can be used to bring it back to life so people can see this beast. On sale for $1200 in the SFBay CL as Charles Parker 436a

Electric Vise #5. 3-3/4 jaws that opens to 5" and weights 38 lbs.

Note from the owner.
Here is something a little different
It is an "Electric" vise presumably made by Capital machine tool of Weedsport NY very famous for the "Lightning Joe" vise which I think is probably the earliest version of this vise.
It has 3¾" jaws and weighs 38 lbs
I also have pictured a very similar version from Mr Phil but his has the same great casting details as the Lightning.
My theory is this is probably the version that went into the highest amount of production hence the lack of details, although they did keep the cool spring-assist swivel lock knob.

Dr Scott, are you doing just machinists vises in the spreadsheet, or any variants like DP or Mill vises?
Outlaw I have not added any Machine and Drill Press vises since most don’t have a model number. Same can be said for Post vises. Basically if a vise has a model number I’ll add it. I have over 30 different styles of vises recorded. These are listed in the category cell. Well maybe an exception in machine vises like Kurt’s. Those I have not added.
