KMScott...Following up on my Rock Island Autovise study. Can you verify that the Rock Island no. 232 jaws are 3-1/2"? My research shows that they came in jaw widths of 3-1/2" and 4", but the casting in your photos should be the 4" jaw width.

If it is in fact a jaw width of 3-1/2", my theory is busted. Either way, I really appreciate it!

Off-sets can still be purchased new if one desires.---Steel construction kind of like the #804 Columbian.---But I suspect China made.

VA, did you notice the offset Hollands could be purchased either on the left side or right side except for the 2", for it was only offered on the right side.

The e-bay offset looks like a welded construction and I agree made in Asia.

You know talking about vise jaws I went to flip over the removable jaws on the Milwaukee 808 (clutch screws too had to even buy a screwdriver bit) as there was a good gouge on the top edge of one jaw and NADA no matter what I did one side would always protrude past the vise body and be short on the other even swapping them front to back any way except for their original configuration.

DFB, on some manufacturers they did not center the threaded holes, especially on older vises. On the American Scale jaws I build I have to slot the jaws to take care of this issue since their threaded holes were never on center. Sounds like your jaws need to be slotted. It might be hard to do if your jaws have the tapered heads like a Flat Head Screw.

I just picked up a C Parker #1 Vise. It was on a workbench that my daughter wanted to buy. Nice vintage bench with the vise was $125.00 I'm thinking of making the wrench section for the swivel nut on the bottom, cleaning and repainting it. It appears to originally have been painted black with 2 shades of red since. How much does non original color impact the price if I was to sell it?

Some guys like paint and some guys like a bare vise with something like Boiled Linseed Oil. I sell both types of finish when I restore vises. I have found that the vises sell no mater what finish I put on my vises, especially when you do a good job, poor finishes really show. Here are some examples I am talking about. I would love to see a picture of your #1 vise and I need a max opening for my spreadsheet. Parker made two different #1 vises. Good luck on your restoration.

Kevin, that's a beautiful "gallery" of vises you have there. I think you should add to your signature, something like "vises for sale" or "Looking for a vise" along with the link. Your vises have the bones of old USA vises and have been restored by your master skills and fantastic parts (jaws, screws, swivel holders...etc), basically making them better than anything available new or even the originals from the early 1900's.

There are always those that find great deals on old vises, but there is also many who do not live in areas where there is an abundance of old vises. Also, not everyone cares to restore their vise. I have seen many that complain about not being able to find a vise or simply ask if anyone knows where they can find a vise......adding the above to your signature would be great for them and you.

Add it just below or above the spreadsheet link and make it in bold lettering so people cannot miss it

Thank you for the information. Attached are pictures of my vise indicating the opening as 3-1/8 and jaw width as 3-1/2. The maximum opening was with the screw still fully engaged in the nut although the jaws would open further.

KMS, what do you think that means? I too have seen photographs of a Parker #1 that shows it mostly as an anvil type vise. Do you think they re-used model numbers?

Yes and Parker is not the only vise company that used the same number's on their vises. I just recorded the second Holland 12-1/2 on the spreadsheet. Athol has two # 77's and I am sure there is more.

KMScott...The Charles A. Parker of Worcester MA, anvil vise is not affiliated at all with the Charles Parker Co. of Meriden CT. That's why you'll never find that vise in any Charles Parker catalogs. I've dropped you some information on the -3- models of the Charles A. Parker vise. That's not to say that Charles Parker of Meriden didn't re-use some of their model #'s.

This photo, which is in the spreadsheet is my vise. I'm pretty sure va.grouseman has a few examples of this vise as well.

Very similar to this one but a 1/2" wider jaws. You can see this one on the spreadsheet located in my signature line on the bottom.

Thank you, KMScott. Looking to add another vise and that one caught my eye. Had seen the Reed name on here many times but didn't seen any examples that were close in photos. The 5 1/2 almost looks like how the Craftsman vises were stamped.

Miller Falls Vise that does not use cast makers marking. 2" jaws opens 3-1/2" and weights 11lbs. This one I am replacing the cast broken jaws with heat treated serrated ones.
