Hi guys,

When I was digging through my vise collection to get out the Rock Island 390 (thanks again for all the info) I pushed this one aside.

Now that I'm re-organizing I remember buying it for $30 and still think it's a very cool vise. I should do something with it...

Didn't see it in the catalog, Simplex/Ridge 42CPSN sheet metal workers vise, 4.5" jaws and 24" in length closed.

--Chopsaw84

It's listed under Desmond Stephens/Simplex. I do not have the confirmed weight and max opening if you could share. Very nice vise. Thanks Kevin.

Yost 41C. 4" Jaws. All the info I have on this anvil vise. Here is a quote from a vise collector.

(Author) Vin.
I have the Yost 41C as well. Holland's made it for Yost or presumably as Holland's made 6 model sizes of this combination design with anvil horn. The 41C counterpart is the Holland's 53H. Interesting that the 41C is the only vise Yost offered like this. The only difference I see with your 41C versus mine is the blunt nose cylinder spindle head which is similar to the Holland's. On my 41C the spindle head is a round meatball. I have no doubt your Yost is 100% original and that Vise manufacturers often switched out universal parts to make product. Thanks for posting your vise. It's only the third 41C I have seen.

Here is another version of a Yost 31C. 3-1/2" jaws.

The Pipe jaws are very similar to Wilton's and Reed's. I know Reed and Wilton used the same vendor since I build both models and would not be surprised if Yost used the same vendor too.

Hi Kevin,

No problem, the Simplex vise weighs 79lbs and max opening is 12.0".

That reminded me of when I bought it off Craigslist many years ago, they didn't have much of a picture and were advertising it as a 12" vise. Cleaning out a storage unit a half hour away from me...

Imagine my surprise when I got there and found out they were talking about the max opening and that the vise itself was 2ft long.

They also had two large Wilton bullet vises standing there for $30 apiece but they had already been sold earlier that day... Can't win them all.

Howdy,

Since I had my vises pulled out, here is another one, not sure if it qualifies for the spreadsheet but any info is appreciated.

Can't recall where it came from but I remember thinking it was like a chinese or taiwanese thing at the time because of how the handle was crimped instead of balled on the ends.

Regardless, I brought it home and found out that I really liked the lines on the jaws and it was actually a pretty smooth feeling vise. That's when I gave it a closer look and noticed the "Made in Poland" stamped on the end of the jaw screw.

Still don't like the handle crimped like that but the vise itself feels quality.

Not in the vise spreadsheet yet....

Paramo No 00 bench vice with swivel base. Made in the UK after WWII but I do not know when.

2.25" wide jaws
2.25" max opening
weight: 8.3 lbs

Nice tiny vise for small work.

KM,
Thanks for the reply.

Here is a Reed 23-1/2 Utility vise that's different from what I saw on the spreadsheet. I found it interesting because I didn't know that Reed made a light duty vise. Although it looks like a homeowner's vise, it's just as robust as their heavier duty models.

Details:
* Make/Model: Reed 23 1/2.
* Manufactured by: Reed Manufacturing Co. Erie, PA. USA.
* Estimated manufacture date: Circa 1960s.
* Jaw measurement information;
Width = 3-1/2".
Opening = Over 4-1/2".
Depth = 2-1/2".
* Features lightly serrated, removable jaw faces and cast in pipe jaws.
* Anvil surface measurements; 2-1/2" x 2".
* 3 hole swivel mount with 360° rotation and 2 lock handles.
* Overall measurements of vise;
Height = 6".
Length = 11".
Width = 7".
* Weight; 23#.

Almost looks a little desmond Stephan simplex ish

Thanks Fierlieppen, I have so many vises to get back in service and will enjoy making parts for my stuff. Been doing machine work since 1973. Appreciate you helping me on the spreadsheet. Some day it will be full.

Anyone know what Parker wrench goes to a Parker 976 swivel base? Is it a number 3? Thanks!

Picked this up last weekend, don't see it on the spreadsheet. Boker #3, 3" jaws, opens to 3-3/4", hardened non replaceable jaw inserts, under bench type swivel. Didn't have a scale handy, but I'll try to weigh it in the next couple days, maybe 10 or 12 lbs.? Very impressive, almost Athol like, jaw support.

Not a big fan of these under the bench type swivels, but when all the pieces are there, and a good guy seller makes you an offer you can't refuse.....:lol_hitti

That Boker looks exactly like an early Athol. I just compared it to my Athol no. 77 and every feature looks the same: support shelf, pinned handle, meatball, body shape and even the screw retaining clip. The Athol no. 79, 3" jaw vise lists @ 18 lbs.

Nice pickup 454ragtop!

Definitely agree it’s a dead ringer for Athol. The jaw support and the cast boss on the bottom are some key features.

I’ve got a correction for the vise spread sheet. On the anchorline vise area the sheet lists a 301 and prentiss did not make a 301. Prentiss made a 300 and then skipped to 302 which is a 2in 2 1/2 opening 3lbs vise.
Here is a picture of mine and I think it’s interesting to note the round slider is casted separate from the main piece of the moving jaw.

The Meadville Vise Co. vises are pretty rare. The Barrett Bros. had some really interesting designs. I just wish there were more out there to see.

Here's a Meadville vise no. 31, with a 1892 catalog scan of the other sizes.

Thanks Fierljeppen, I appreciate the catalog page and I like the Meadville vises, especially the collar design, not as dirty under the handle support.

Oh that's nice KMS.---That's a prize.---Has flared handle ends like the 519 Craftsman's.

Yes handle knobs are like the Starrett's. It is a nice vise.

Wow! Over 3000 models listed in the spreadsheet and still growing...very nice KMScott. The newer patent section is a huge improvement, wondering if you're getting a little help from the patent guru?

Here's some catalog scans for the Parker 277 and Prentiss Shepard 68.
