The "mechanism" that locks the swivel base and rotation of the Yost rotator vises is just a large through bolt to which the lever is threaded onto.

Here are some pics of a 4 1/2" Yost swivel jaw rotator I acquired last year. You can see that the "barrel" that slips over the swivel base and accepts the static jaw (nothing is really "static on this vise") is partially cut down the middle and it's essentially just pinched when that bolt is tightened.

Great photos thanks for the informative post.

Here is my HB Smith
It’s marked 1 comma A
Maybe that’s a foundry error ??
Jaws 3 3/4 inches wide but there are signs they’ve been narrowed a bit.
4 1/2 inch clamping capacity
The slide was damaged and the pipe jaws missing when I bought it but how often do you run across these?

It weighs 42 pounds including the base plate. I don’t have the threaded post or the wingnut.

.

That patent date looks to be August 1, 1865. That would be patent #49094 (a palindrome) granted to H.B. Dart for the pipe jaws.

Patent located here:
https://pdfpiw.uspto.gov/.piw?PageN...%26S1=0049094.PN.%26OS=pn/49094%26RS=PN/49094

And here:
https://patents.google.com/patent/US49094A/en?oq=us49094

The patent shows what looks like a simple nut rather than a Ram's Horn, jaws are Very Parkerish....

Parker #87 vs Smith 1A side view. I got curious about the pipe jaws, they are a perfect fit in the Parker except for the cross pin is in a different location.
There are definitely similar features in the two vises.

Get,

Dart's patent has also appeared on Parker vises.

Scan Man Jeppen may have image that show's the Dart Patent on a Parker.

JKB

You've got it right, that style combination vise is all about the Dart patent. I think that you could add Meadville's combo vise into this mix as well.

H.B. Smith is still an active company after being founded in the mid 1850's. They were most famous for manufacturing boilers, while the Dart patent vise was more of line card item offered for the pipe-fitters. They mfg. the vise up to the early 1900's, when it appears The Oswego Tool Co. started making combo vises for H.B. Smith, Parker and a private labeled vise for the Oil Well Supply Co.

The Dart patent vise had several style changes over the years, but always retained a sense of the original patent. I'm personally very fond of these vises and own a couple of examples of them.

I added the Meadville type in the picture but this one is cast J. S. & Co.
The one on the right is another Parker. I have a 289 1/2" but it is to heavy and not convenient to put in the picture of old combo vises.

Can this be identified from this one picture?

Just one bad picture, the shape seems like Wilton bullet but no Wilton name visible, maybe the old ones didn't have it or on the other side? Are there cheap vises with similar shape to Bullets?

Thanks, I won't be able to see it in person for a while. Every picture of a Wilton like that I've seen has included cast in raised letters spelling out Wilton, were there models shaped like this that didn't? Maybe just a sticker, paint, or metal plate that could have been worn off?

I'm looking for help identifying the cars and year in the Wilton no. 835 brochure below. This will help us put a more solid date on the beginning of the Wilton Tradesman "1700 series" and "740 series" mechanics vises.

My first inclination is late 1960's Ford, GTO and Mercury? But, I'm looking for more knowledgeable eyes than my own. Thanks in advance!
