PierceA - On board with the fabricated/modified mainscrew and collar/retainer theory, especially with the empty pocket where an internal mainscrew retaining collar would fit.
The style of the gusset on the dynamic jaw support was actually one of the features that I thought suggested Prentiss inspiration, pretty similar e.g. on the model 254 one post up. Good point on the Reed similarity too.

The meatball screw head not uncommon, Rock Island, early Reed's and Parker's come to mind and probably a few others. But the taper right after the meatball going into the vise, never seen anything like that.

That taper and sharp cusp is exactly what caught my eye. In a few months of browsing an unhealthy portion of the big vise thread, also cannot recall seeing anything nearly matching.

Also the collar holding the screw, both Desmond Stephens and Parker used this, but neither had the cast in "collar" on top of the collar; that is quite unique. Also you stated this was a 4 1/2", Parkers had 1 screw holding the collar till you got to 6" or greater, and I do not recall what Desmond did, but this has 2 screws for a smaller 4 1/2".

The external collar underneath the cast "awning", also now strikes me as a part later fabricated to fit in that small space, more than an original design.

My 4-1/2 Ridge-Simplex has a single large flat head screw holding the collar, guessing the Desmond matches this.

2-screw Parker collar, that hits close to home, need one for a 107. Probably going to be a fabrication project.

I agree with you Pierce that the collar was fabricated later. The meatball Assy could also have been a custom made spindle

Kevin, don't know if you saw this previously, I had posted this in the main vise thread back in 2014. But the link I had posted no longer has the vise or story behind it so I will post pictures plus the story the OP had on this vise.

This vise has some really cool mods and enhancements to it; definitely done by someone with maching skills.Whether you would like to add it to the spreadsheet, that is up to you but according to the author of the article, it was either Parker that modified it for the Marines or The USMC themselves modified it. I think that is where the author made a mistake, he forgot to mention that the mods could have been made by KMS also

"The Chas. Parker Co. № 1073½ "Eclipse" Machinist's Vise

Digging up old post. Does anyone know what the modifications to this vise do? Maybe a ratcheting mechanism?

May have a lead on a closely related vise and would like to be armed with a little more knowledge when I check it out.

The vise is a 1074 with the number cast in the static jaw. I was able to look at it today.

The screw has the portion at the end without threads, and is bored/tapped at the end. Whatever retaining bracket and hardware that existed is now missing.

The screw head is not of a radically modified form like the 1073-1/2 with the stamped model no. plate. I think there is an extra pin in it.
The collar is a two piece design I have not seen before. There was no spring surrounding the screw.

I could not tell any special functions this vise has or previously had, and wasn't comfortable asking to disassemble the collar assembly, but would have loved to.

My sense is this is the 4" model of a small production run, possibly a simplified version, and the above posted vise is the 3-1/2" in an earlier or prototype form.
I also lead toward the 1073-1/2 being done by Parker, not USMC. Or maybe a collaboration.
Would love to know more about them.

Oh nice find, thanks rusty. That covers everything.
Looks like the lock handle and opening knob got pulled off and someone converted this one to a standard vise. Shame about all the missing bits but cool to learn about.

I guess it could go under the name of custom fab vises/Bubba. Looks like a challenge to restore back to good working condition. The vise handle reminds me of the older mill vises. Thanks for sharing.

Possibly for the record.
A Hardy vise with advertisements, Supplee-Biddle unknown date.
Looks as if only three jaw sizes were made.
This jaw measures 2". Will open the advertised 2 1/4" and weighs 1lb 15.1ozs.

Here's one I never heard of before and looks quite interesting. Sure Grip 141, weighs 62 lbs, 4 inch jaws that open up to 7". Not mine, saw it on a local add. It has the scalloped jaws that VA likes, swivel jaw; too bad it is missing the original swivel pins, otherwise a cool and somewhat rare find.







Kevin, I checked the spreadsheet and it lists a suPer grip, which is the vise from the post below. So if you could make the change to Sure instead of Super, then you could add this one as the 2nd Sure Grip on the spreadsheet

FMC1959...Always nice to hear from you. "Sure Grip" is a 1910 trademark of the Simmons Hardware Co. of St. Louis, MO.

The Sure Grip vise no.141 is a private labeled Jacobson Patent vise, mfg. by the Rock Island Mfg. Co. A very interesting vise indeed.

These Stanleys sold on a large auction site for a lot more than my bids.

755: 2.5in jaws open to 2.5in, 6.75lbs.
675: 2.5in jaws open to 2.5in, 9lbs, swivel release under bench.

Catalog page is from April 1934 Stanley Catalog No.34 with some solid info and also showing models 753, 754.
Photos of 754 previously posted here.

This 675 and the 653, 663 already on the spreadsheet seem related and to follow this model numbering pattern:
"6XY"
X=5 > stationary
X=6 > clamp on
X=7 > swivel lock under bench
Y=3 > 2" jaw
Y=4 > 2-1/4" jaw (assumed)
Y=5 > 2-1/2" jaw
I tend to imagine all nine combinations were manufactured. I wonder if 700-series are strictly later than 600-series.

Interesting vise, the dynamic jaw/quick release housing occupies the space where a typical protruding slide support would be. Combined with a quite long slide, I bet not many of these survived intact.

Anyone familiar with the manufacturer? Quick search, this seems like it could be a match.

Glisenti Wilton 150. Assuming this Italian Wilton has 150mm jaw width (5.905). The screws are metric. Very similiar to the Powerscrew model. No other spec:s yet.

Your Parker #3 is missing the swivel plates and the large wing nut. Your vise was made before Parker redesigned the swivel base you see most the time an later vises. Parker before 1900 had a long threaded rod go through your wooden bench and the swivel plates were released from under the bench with a large wing nut.

If you could can you add the jaw width, weight and while the vise is closed measure the square slider hanging out the back for max opening. I will ad your vise to the spreadsheet. Thanks Kevin.

That's a top shelf find! It's one of Simpson's original patent vises.

The Luther vise is nice, but that Athol no.42 vise is in a league of it's own.

ejot...I had to wrap my head around that one for a while before I recognized it as an E.W. Fulton patent no. 1,299,828 Velox vise. It was briefly mfg. by the National Metal Products Co., of Indianapolis, IN., before heading over to the Oswego Tool Co., with E.W. Fulton in 1924.

It's pretty rare to see a Velox vise with the "National" casting.

Yes that Hollands offset Coachmakers vise is a once in a lifetime find. That is the vise I would mount on my bench, that offset feature is useful especially in woodworking.
