So after looking through countless pictures of everyones work benches, I am still at a loss. The first attached picture is the bench I built myself last fall. The posts are 4x6 and the top is strung together with 2x6s. The problem is, that due to the 4x6 posts in the corners, it's making mounting my vise really difficult for having a clear spo tto drill for the bolts. If I want it on the corner, I have to slide it back too far in to the bench to clear the post. My other option is to slide it over further in from the edge closer to the center of the bench, but i'd like it as close to the corner as possible. And even then, I have to slide it in further than id like to clear the 2x6 (my vist isnt very big) Anybody run in to a similar issue? I'm thinking maybe I could build an overhang of sorts off the right side of the bench that I could attach the vise to? I have an idea of something I wish I could fab out of metal, but maybe someone knows if it exists for purchase? I driew a quick sketch in paint and attached it as well.

Thanks!

how about a small trailer hitch bolted on to the bench. You can then fabricate a stand that you can slide in at anytime. Then you can fabricated any type of attachments to it, like a bench grinder, or anything else you can think of. With the hitch you can swap out all kinds of tools, and use the same space. LINK of possible mounts looks like the E100 would bolt on to that 2x6

That's how I did mine and I love it. Mine is also mounted to a steel frame that's attached to the wall, and it's VERY sturdy. I've used way to many vices that were on the verge of ripping out of their mounts, so I went all out on mine.

If you don't need the vise to be removable why no use longer lag bolts and secure the vise to the 4x6 posts? Or a lot of people use the hitch mount idea like was mentioned above.

That's a great idea, and one I will explore. Thanks for the idea. Sounds like a versatile of going about it.

I use lag bolts when a vise foot is on top of a solid bench member. Never had a problem.

Wow, I don't know why that didn't dawn on me.... brain fart.good idea haha. Much simpler.

Don't ask.
Through bolt with a backer where you can, put a lag bolt into the post or other framing if you have to. It will be as strong and solid as the bench.

Thanks for all the input everyone. I ended up using lag bolts in 2 of the 3 locations, and a through bolt in the 3rd. Worked out great. Don't know much about the vise other than it was my grandfathers, and it was stamped with made in te USA on the bottom. I think I will incorporate the hitch mount for my small arbor press since i don't use it nearly as much as my vise.
