Vise Mounting

Thanks to input from everyone here, I am the proud owner of a Wilton 1765 vise. 6.5" and 70 lbs of made in USA goodness. Now, a quick question regarding mounting this thing.

I'm sure it's a non-issue but I can't for the life of me figure out why they made the base the way they did. The holes are not symmetrical. Is there a certain direction the base is supposed to be pointing for general use, or perhaps it's to help mount in a corner somehow? Or are they just sloppy?

Check out the diagram of the holes...

One more thing... would it matter at all for stability or srength if I were to mount the vise in a way where it was typically in a diamond instead of a square? In other words, instead of mounting flat to the edge of the workbench, I would rotate it 45-degrees so one mounting hole is directly under the handle. It would help me get bolts through the bench where I need them if I mounted this way.

Thanks again for all the good advise!

I'm not sure about the mounting. My guess is that it would not matter.

Very nice vise! I want to get a Wilton some day. Very expensive. Where did you purchase it from?

I don't believe you will be able to mount it diagonally. In order to mount it diagonally, you will have to push the vise back farther off of the edge of the workbench. This will put the jaw opening above the workbench, which you don't want. You want the jaw opening to be hanging over the edge of the workbench, so if you need to place a long item down through the jaws, it won't hit the workbench.

Look at how you use it. The mountings on most vises I have had is similar or is 3 point. I usually put the larger side towards where the stresses will be up and the smaller side for down. If a Wood table is used I usually put a flat iron between the two bolts to spread pressure and prevent table damage.

Thanks for the ad"vise". Sorry, couldn't resist. :)

I bought it at Northern Tool. They sell it for #399 plus shipping.

If you mount it to a corner make sure the handle overhangs both sides. I even rounded the corner on my work bench to allow the handle to overhang through the entire 90 degree swivel of the vice around the corner.

Yeah, one nice thing about this vise is that the jaws hang out really far compared to my old one. So I can mount it a little farther back and still have it hanging out farther into space. I love this thing! The paint could have been better quality, it's really thin. But they do clear coat everything including a thick protective coat of varnish on the bare metal surfaces so there is no surface rust when you get it. Gonna be some work to get it off!

Email their support group. There HAS to be a reason the dimensions aren't squared. That "can't" be slop. Maybe a "2 opposing triangles are stonger than a square" kind of concept???

That's a nice vice. I bought one four years ago for work and told my employees that the first one I saw using a hammer on it would be fired on the spot. Previous normal vice life was only a matter of months, because of the my precesser believed a vise was just another desposable tool so he bough nothing more expensive that $50

I have been lurking these forums for quite some time and honestly this place is great. There are many extremely knowledgable people here but not for nuttin i cant beleive nobody has figured out why the holes on this "vice" are not a perfect square, it seems pretty obvious to me. The manufacturer is allowing more work room on one side of the vice. Perhaps im wrong??

Anyway my house is about 2 months away from completion. Its a 6000 sq ft house with a 3-4 car garage its only has 3 garage doors but its the size of a 4 car because i choose not to have the builder put the stairs that go from the garage to the basment this allows me to fit all my tools and toys..

Would someone explain how to post pics please????

Thanks for all the great ideas i now have for the garage!!!!!!

GOT IT!!!

The larger spacing goes towards the front of the vise, or towards the jaws. It makes sense when you think about it. More pressure is produced directly below the jaws than at the rear of the vise, so the pressure is distributed over a larger area there.

I don't know why they bother to reduce the spacing in the rear (or increase the front) by 1.25" rather than making the whole thing symmetrical, but there ya go.
