I got this at an auction. It says BS1 on it. It is obviously missing an endcap to the handle. Can anybody offer any more details?

That's probably the complete thing, by the looks of it. You can buy skeleton sets like that for making your own bench wood vice. This is an example:

Thanks Fretters
I based my comment on what I remember. I can't recall ever seeing a woodworking bench vise that didn't have a rectangular cast iron piece that a final user can screw onto his/her favorite piece of hardwood to make a nice little clamper. If I wanted to build a nice vise, I would get one of those kits. There is a shop nearby that sells scraps of exotic hardwood. That has me thinking...

It is a screw for a wooden leg vise. I have a couple of them.

Boatman:
Looks like you nailed it on the ID of that mystery piece of hardware. :rocker:
Check out the vise thread and post some more pics over there if you can.

Fretters:
If you were referring to this style instead of the more commonly found under mount vise, you get credit for the first correct answer. :)

Here is a pic I found on the web.

Shift: isn't if for a WOOD vise so maybe i get a A- for my post? :D

Drives:
Perhaps I was only thinking of my own narrow image of a wood vise which up until today only included the usual under mount style.
You had the first reply with the general term of wood vise so of course you get full credit for your answer.

I found this image on line. Love the wheels!
And the ability to just clamp it onto a bench when needed is very handy for those of us who don't have room for a dedicated woodworking bench.

Shift: that wood vise you found looks very nice, but as far as easy to use it looks like you need 3 hands. :dunno:

i guess we all need to open our minds a bit when somebody says they have a vise (vice). my first vise i bought for my home's little workshop was a Zyliss that also clamps on the side of a work bench or sawhorse or even a deck.

interesting vise that wood vise that looks like a blacksmith vise you guys found that might be the actual vise for Ramper's screw.

That's a Moxon benchtop vise. Very handy.

I prepared 2 sets of hardware for making a couple.

drives,

Your first YouTube link shows how it works.

Secure it to the bench with dogs or clamps.

Set one side to the material thickness and then the other side for clamping the work piece.

Then just saw or plane or work on the work piece.

Easy peasy!

BTW, Today is the day to get the hardware. ENCO is having a 25% off and free shipping sale if you use the two coupon codes. They have the hand wheel, nuts, washers and ACME threaded rod (3/4x6). 3' of threaded rod (RH thread) will make two sets, so make one wide vise and one narrow, or make one for a friend.

The expensive part is the ACME 3/4x6 two part (Rough and finish) tap that you need. Also need a few drills, including the right one for the tap.

All this is less than half the cost of the Bench crafted kit, although the hand wheels aren't dished like the kit has, and the ACME thread is 6 instead of the kits 10.

Here is a bench I built a couple of years ago with twin leg vises. The modern screws are less tolerant of misaligned jaws than the screw shown at the beginning. Those old screw have almost a ball and socket connection.
