Hey All,

Looking for some motivation to select a paint scheme for the Man Cave / Garage.

I've found several that I like, am opening it up to a vote for the final decision!
Disregard contents, it's the wall paint I'm interested in!

Found these all on Google Images, Betcha some of them belong to this crowd!

I named Each image A-E, the thumbnails display sorted:
A,B,C
D,E

A for avocado, E for eggplant or F for fuschia . . . Don't mind me. I work in a architectural firm, too close to the interiors department, obviously. Those nancy boy colors are what not to paint it.

I voted 'B', but that comes with a "it depends" clause because i also like 'C'. I think if you are going to be parking a nice sports car in there, I wouldn't want the bottom color to be taller on the wall than the car itself for fear of dwarfing the car or drawing the eye away from the car if that's your focal point. However, if you are mainly going for a "cave" with seating and bar area, then I think the color breaks should coincide with the table heights or other focal aspect height (couch, television, picture, etc.). Then again, if it's a shop/cave, then the color breaks should coincide with the cabinet heights or have some association with the cabinets or other wall features.

What colour car will be parked in it?

The (white) Mazda sits on the curb. For now, the contents include but are not limited to my red+black zx6r (oldschool), Vintage Coca-cola machine, Workshop tools etc.

For future, There will definitely be a masterpiece worth showing off, just not at that stage in life yet.

my68spit -- Thanks for the input! All very good thoughts indeed.
--> For the record, I plan on segmenting an area for parking, area for wrenching, and either a couch-lounge, or pool table / darts setup. Making line placement a tricky one!

You've got six letters to vote on but only 5 pics. Where is secret option F?

Woops.

F, Give up:

A for me. I have my workshop painted almost identical. . But use black pinstripe on either side of the red line.. I want to do the garage the same.. but the wife won't have it!! Ill have to turn in my man card if I don't win that argument!

Voted 'E'. 'D' is a really small pic....

They all seem to be a variation on the same theme - gray/red/black, etc. These seem to be common colors for a lot of guys re-doing their box. If those colors go with your rides, cool - but there are other colors out there. I'd like to see a garage with perhaps a light gray / turquoise combo....

I voted 'A'.
I like the red trim on the grey wall, but wasn't a fan of the black border like in 'B'

I think no matter which design you choose , you should make the scheme black & red :headscrat:dunno:

BTW - That pic in #8 almost made me :scared: cry.

I voted for "E" as his garage turned out real nice. The grey has a nice contrast to it. What ever color you choose, you will be happy as it gives the garage a "finished" look. Mine has been sitting there primed for two years.....damn I need to paint that.

By the way, "E's" picture comes from this site. His garage build can be found here:

Does it really matter? If it's a real garage, your not going to see much of the bottom anyway....it's going to be full of stuff.

The key is that you use at least semi-gloss exterior paint so it's easier to keep clean....the top is a light color for good light reflection and the ceiling white for better reflection.

Exactly.

I painted mine blue/off white to match my tile and reflect light. The off white upper does show still, but the blue is 90% hidden.

Definitely use semi-gloss. It is much easier to clean up later.

Thanks for all the participation everyone!

Never expected to see such an active vote. :D

Though I'm inclined to agree, I've been doing a pretty good job of keeping my clutter down, and storage in the two sheds I have on property, so far, lots of walls showing!

I stuck to red as a primary accent because of the coke machine and red motorcycle, So you know my reasoning here!

Paint it paint. Do it the way you are leaning towards and see how you like it. Come back and add accent stripes or repaint the top or bottom as needed. Its only paint...

BTW, A or C...

I agree paint it how you like it best and the good thing about paint is you can paint over again and change it. :) They all look pretty nice though and I'd take anyone of them considering how my garage/workshop looks right now :)

I voted "E" just because I like the red and black theme, and the owner has balls enough to go with a color that stands out on the bottom. But then again, I have maroon walls and a black ceiling.

A person has to think outside of the box once in a while, and not try to copy everything they see. :rocker:

And paint isn't so expensive that it can't be done over in the future. :rocker:

Good Call on paint being cheap, though I cant imagine having to paint again because of my inability to make a decision. (All decisions final, I suppose, haha)

Whatever you choose, add the wall sign " My Shop, My Rules" end of discussion. Just show us pictures of your progress.
I'm looking forward to the neon sign portion of this project :pimpflash

When you became a member of Garage Journal, you should have read the fine print about "No Garage decisions being FINAL". You have became a member, and with that, it is almost a guarantee that before you start to raise a paint brush, dozens of paint themes will go through your noggin'.

12 months from now, you will look at a thread and decide it's time to "reno" the garage. At that time, you will realize that you are "hooked" on this site.

Also, you will now have to start a "Garage Fund". That involves hiding money into a top secret bank account under an alias name. This will be so that the wife never finds out about the said account. Do a real diehard garage fan, this may also involve a safety deposit box t store extra cash. This extra money is for the purchase of much needed tools that you may never own but just in case you will, you now have that tool to do it. The extra money also will go towards the garage expansion fund. After being here, looking through all of the threads, you will realize that you no longer have enough room to do what you desire. This may involve something as small as a lean-to all the way up to a garage that you can take a Sunday drive in.

So just remember my friend....No garage is complete when you stop with custom paint.

My son has announced to the family that my garage will be finished when I'm either; too old and decrepit to crawl out to the work bench, or dead. Told him not to hold his breath
