Wachu know about outdoor LED yard lights?

I have a couple of those garden-variety overhead floodlights. You know the kind – one is mounted on the front of my garage at the peak and lights my whole dooryard and parking area. The other one is on a pole at the end of my used car lot and cast light over the whole thing. I believe they are mercury vapor?

Both of them are at least 20 years old and the photocells have gone bad so they stay on 24 hours unless I turn them off. I was going to replace the photocells, but I figured that now might be the time to upgrade to more efficient lighting if it exists.

I did a quick search and saw that they do make LED outdoor floodlights, one being called the yard blaster. My assumption is that these would be much more efficient than the old lights I have. And I figure that if I'm going to go up that high in the air, I might as well go for new and the most efficient there is.

To those that know about these things, is LED the way to go? Is there something even better? I saw one site that claims they are 85% more efficient than the old-style. Anyone have any real experience on this?

Any knowledgeable input on this would be much appreciated.

Thanks. I wonder if they are as durable as the current ones are?

I've had a wall pack on the west end of my house for about 2 years now, no issues, no problems. I really like this light, and it provides a nice amount of light without being overwhelming.

I put a Floodlight on my Dad's house at about the same time, I like it, he thinks it is too bright, people in their 80's don't embrace change well... :)

I have these floods on the front of my house, really like them too.

I replaced fixtures that either used halogen tubes, or halogen spots, seemed like I was constantly replacing bulbs in those things.

To be fair I had an acquaintance that was a lighting sales guy, and he cut me some killer deals on these things.

I've been using that fixture on industrial projects for the last couple years, it seems to work out pretty well.

They also have a nifty interior light fixture that takes the place of a regular old 4 foot T8 fluorescent.

LED definitely draws bugs at my house.

The Rab stuff looks pretty impressive, but I'm sure its priced impressively as well.

I replaced a motion light with an LED fixture by Utilitech from lowes.

Aluminum body, and ridiculously bright light. I went ahead and bought a couple of photo sensored floods that I've installed on my new build. If they are half as solid as the motion was it'll be good.

LED lighting has dropped so quickly as to make even CFL flood lights no longer a real choice. I dropped a couple of LED flood lights into standard housings and daaaang, they are nice. Bright light, instant, and not that expensive. The lights on the front of my house don't go off... ever. I need to replace fixture with working photocells, but geez, these things are so cheap to operate now I don't mind that much.

I'd swap out my 300W & 500W Halogen flood lights for LED in a heartbeat if I could get ones that would work with a dimmer...
