This is the pin that connects the lever to the jack to ratchet the jack, when I got the jack this pin was large bolt someone cobbled together and welded in several places, the bracket that holds it was broken in several places so these pieces had to be fabricated, my guess is that this area receives tons of stress...literally:lol_hitti

Very nice work. I like the effort you put in to complete the rivets in the channels on the main arms.

You and Thomas have me twitching to get one of these old things. I don't need any other projects right now. Guess I need to get off my **** and finish a few so I can start some new ones!!!

Heck, I just realized we are neighbors! I'm down south in BA.

Jeff

Thank you it was very hard not to just weld them but it would have taken away from the originality, and yes we sure are neigbors!

With a car on that jack the jack will jack itself down ( after the lever is tripped to the lower position). You can do one click at a time if you hold the handle or move the handle and the handle will really move pretty fast all by itself. Just don't get too close when the handle is really swinging. Try it and you will see what I mean. Another way of looking at it, in the lowering mode, the handle will move by itself the same stroke as it was moved when jacking up the car.

I just saw one of these at the swap meet yesterday here in Canfield, Ohio. Much bigger in real life than it appears to be here in the post. They wanted $125 for the jack. Mind if I ask what you paid for yours? I feel as if i should go back and buy that thing..Thanks.

I believe I paid 45.00 , but mine was rusted and frozen solid , took days just to free it up and even had to cut some bolt heads off because they were seized , powder coating was 75.00 , steel and Channel I got from scrap , still cost 30.00 , the hardware and roll pins would have been another 75.00 or more but they saw what it was for and donated the hardware , being a firefighter didnt hurt either , the vinyl " roll a car " was 30.00 So I'm looking in the range of 260.00 ish , not including months of labor , not sure if I could get that back out of it but to me it's a piece of automotive history that's nearly 100 years old so to me it's priceless :)

rburke65 - if the one you saw at the swap meet looked to be in decent shape, the $ doesn't sound too bad. Once it's brought back to life, it'll last another 100 years, as fireman164 said.

Rear wheels not so easy, they were rusted pretty bad as well but no one sells this size bearing anymore, so I had to refurbish. The cages were bent from the balls coming out and freely rolling around so I gently straigtened them with a hammer and punch, then had to wire wheel the rust off each ball only 16 of those:bounce:

Looks like we have something in common!
I too painted mine blue after finding it to be the color in the corners where the resprays couldn't get. I wonder if the jacks may have been two tone i.e. white handles? This pic is prior to my applying the Walker Roll-A-Car stickers. I copied the font from the brass label. Where did you come up with your design?
Fantastic job on the restore.

On page 2 of this post there are some ads I bought off eBay of the original jack, so I took those to a sign maker , they got as close as they could. Looks like yours is a few steps newer having hydraulics, I fell in love with these after seeing bb767's walker rebuild, a lot of time and effort goes into these, that most people don't see , so to find a place like garage journal to post the restoration projects for people who love this stuff is great. Most of the people i know could care less about the craftsmanship that goes into all of the projects on this site. Thanks for the complements , yours is amazing too !

After all that work I couldn't bear for mine get scratched or dirtied so I ended up putting it on display in my office. What will you do with yours? The thing with the craftsmanship of these jacks, they are simple but ingenious at the same time and yet they still were able to incorporate style and personality into the function.

My shop is almost finished , I still have to insulate and sheet rock , but I would like to display it, I have a lift and another newer floor jack so I don't see any reason to need to use it.

Well the second rear wheel was more of a pain , the cage holes were in a awy that the ball bearings on three holes would just fall through, so had to do a little tweaking, notice the first pic you can see daylight above the ball.

Fantastic work fireman. Been enjoying this thread immensely. Like others here, I enjoy refurbing vintage machinery and am always glad to know there are others out there who are likewise afflicted.

Your craftsmanship and attention to detail are to be admired. Keep the Picts coming...

Got to work on the plates some, this is very hard, first masked off the edges, and sprayed the plate black, then tried to get a small flat block with fine sand paper and just stay on the high spots, didnt work took paint off in areas I didnt want. Then stripped and resprayed and tried with a exacto knife, paint was too thick and pulled away other areas, so the third time I used SEM guide coat its really thin, so it doesnt build up so thick, still not what I wanted but I think it will have to do. The last pic is what I started with notice all the pits from the blaster, not totally sure they left my masking tape on before they blasted. This was as far as I got tonight, had to take a break before I go crazy:willy_nil

Well I did go back to the swap meet here in Canfield, Ohio to check out that again, and it was gone! Someone got a great piece. I love taking a piece like that and restoring it....not that I needed another project, but...... You did a nice job fireman 164!

I just found this and read thru the entire thread rather than going out to the garage and play

I have the same jack and have been wanting to restore it but have a few other more pressing (and easier) projects going now

Your jack looks fantastic and is my new inspiration
Thank you fireman for taking the time to document your build

fireman, I think now you need to build a small shrine for it there in your shop:rocker:
