Hey guys.

So I'm taking an adult education class at a local voke school and got to poke around their shop.
They don't have a single conventional toolbox like we normally think of. They're all cabinets of various configurations. I don't -think- they're custom deals since all the hangers/slots/printing etc look pretty well finished. Some are solid metal doors, some are glass. The ones I saw a brand name on were all snapon.

I looked around online and can't find anything close to what they had....from any brand. There's plenty of basic cabinets that I'm sure could be customized to come close but probably wouldn't have that factory look.

Does anyone have any idea what I saw? is such a thing still being manufactured new, or could possibly be found used?

Thanks ahead of time.

You can find the Snap on ones used, I have one that used to hold screwdrivers.

The backer board/racking was in rough shape from age so I tossed it, and I imagine a lot of them are like that but the cases themselves are around.

First one I saw, seems a bit high for what it is.

Another one:

It's a common way for techs schools to store tools. Both my high school shop and tech had those cabinets wrapped around the parameter of the shop.

Close. It's hard to tell without the "backer board" or whatever I should be calling it. This "backer board" is what makes them so attractive too, since otherwise it'd just be a cabinet.

The ones I saw were probably 3.5ft tall, one stacked on another. They each were set up for and with a specific set of tools.

I.e....one was every ratchet and socket you could own, with a specific labeled and often times outlined place for each tool.

So this had occurred to me. Not that it's some special industrial/municipal box unavailable to us...but maybe they were made decades ago and are either still in use by the institution or we're used til broken beyond repair and trashed.

The school was first opened in 1908. So how old the boxes are could be anyone's guess.

I think they were called tool control boards. Snap-on and Proto were the common ones back in the day.
I imagine they are still available from Snap-on for government or industry use

You're right.

Found this

And then plenty of aftermarket customizable stuff on Google once I knew the right words to search.

Looks like the actual snap on ones are indeed vintage, desirable, and pricey.

There's a used machinery dealer in Chicago that has a bunch of snap on cabinets and boards. He's asking 275 each. I had one before. That's too rich for me.
