I don't have a good eye for what is nice and what isn't. Sorry, but I have zero "interior designer" in me.

I am getting ready to paint the walls in my garage and I just can't decide on color.

Ceiling and top part are white, that's easy.

But bottom 4-5ft I want to paint a different color. I thought about red, about the color of Snap On toolboxes. My Mom thought that would be odd for a wall color.

Thought about gray, same as floor epoxy color, but I think that'd bee too much of the same color.

Thought about a dark charcoal color, but I think too dark.

Kind of leaning on red, with a black molding against floor.

This probably won't help, but I'm building a house, and I'm painting the ceiling and walls in my garage white. The garage will more than likely receive no external light, and I want it to be as bright as possible in there when I'm working on stuff.

the bottom 4-5 ft of walls being a strong contrasting color like a deep dark blue would look great, BUT...show EVERY single nick and scratch, so be prepared to touch-up often

Any color other than white and including white will need touch up in a garage. I'm no fashion bug I believe the fad right now of red, white, grey, black is going to last a bit longer but they all get beat up if you work in your garage. Make it easy to clean and paint it plain white with a semigloss...

My new color in my garage is light grey, about the color of the border on this post. My trim is a darker gray off the same Sherwin-Williams paint card.

However, I think a light gray with a blue trim, such as on the Reply to Thread banner, would be a nice combo.

Remember, the door is open alot so make sure you paint with exterior paint. It will last longer and be easier to clean up.

Yeah that's fine, I expect to have to repaint every couple years.

I like the red idea! Getting inspiration from your toolbox is great… and you said you don't have any interior designer in you! As long as you get a durable interior paint you shouldn’t have to repaint red any more often than white.

I did one wall of my garage in solid red. It looked terrible. And it was a huge pain in the neck to re-cover it in a way that hid the bright red.

I'm no interior designer, but I'd go with a slightly different shade of grey than the floor, maybe with a 2"-4" red stripe at the dividing line. It's a tried and true design.

Olympic quick silver wall, blue & white stripe and gray floor. Thought about gray, red combo even though I do like it I decided against it. Just too much OHIO State for me. Go BLUE! How bout them TIGERS?

I was just about to post in this thread but I noticed the OP is banned. Wow, that caught me by surprise.

I left the bottom of mine dark gray to help hide the "dirt".

Wow! Nate is banned? Well in any event, it's doubtful that he will be only guy looking for color advice. I did a medium gray semi gloss over a light skip trowel plaster job and di the woodwork with a a meduim teal, It looks really sharp. I'll see if I have pic.
Cheers

A tip from my journeyman painter father-in-law: light grey. Still reflects light well, so no cave effect but hides dirt.

My plan is this plus one blue stripe. I don't have the patience for 3 colors. If I did, white top, blue stripe and grey bottom would be my choice.

Here is my version of gray....

How do you like that spiral staircase? I like the idea of a small footprint on the shop floor but worry about issues of carrying items up and down a spiral stair with bannisters.

well, I don't know about the OP and the ban....

but, we painted our bedroom ceiling tray (raised portion in the master) (trey?) a red color to match the bedding my wife bought. It's more burgandy - but, still red family.

I couldn't believe how many coats it took to cover - even after a tinted primer.

For what it's worth my 2 pence is this:

- I love the striped paint jobs - all the colors, it makes the garage look custom and like someone cared
- I lean toward a contast that is VERY noticable - too much work to paint it for it to be subtle.
- Earth tones are better for resale if you care
- as mentioned above, light refraction is important...but, I'd rather buy a few more lights and have the color I wanted than go with white/white-ish.

PS: JUDE20VT - I REALLY dig that garage. The roofing material as a wainscotting looks fantastic. on a scale of 1-10 - how would you rate the difficulty and expense?

One of the smart things we did.....yea, it's not real easy getting large boxes up....we went with the 30w stairs....no problems getting the typical plastic crate up there....if it's really big then we raise it up through the upstairs window (see the link for my garage build in my sig to see a pic of the outside).

We have 3 kids and the stairs do a good job of slowing them down...after 2 years, no tumbles...

If you go with the 36" width stair, you would have plenty of room....even with the 30", you would be surprised and what will fit....quite often I will be about half way up and my wife on the top and I just hand her boxes....all your really doing is just reaching around the center pole and lifting up....

Does anyone have any pics of the black, red and yellow stripped garage? I lost the pics that I saved somewhere.

Light gray exterior paint, huh? I'll keep that I mind. Part of me wants to paint it hot pink, lol. Two reasons; 1) I can always make a joke about it being "pink on the inside", 2) Subaru STI pink.

I don't think anyone has ever been foolish enough to do it. Sounds like a challenge.

I did the floors in a light grey.

Then cut that color in half with white and did the bottom half in light grey.

Then I did the top half in a semi-gloss white to give me more light.

I am happy with the results.

I'm going to bump this thread, instead of starting a new one.

I've got white walls in my garage that are from 2004. Looks like the previous owners smoked in the garage, so it has that yellow nicotine stain :-\

I plan to paint similar to some of the schemes here, light gray bottom, dividing stripe in black, then white uppers and white ceiling. I've read that people seem to not like the box store product lines. Can anyone recommend a good, but CHEAP paint? I've got quite a lot of wall space to cover, so i don't want to break the bank repainting the walls.

Thanks

I considered cleaning with just some simple green in a spray bottle and some elbow grease. It's not terrible, and i figured that any paint should mask up the majority of the discoloring. The smell is getting better since i started airing out the garage though, so I'm mainly concerned about getting a uniform nice coat of paint in there.
