Wall Stripes Question

I'm painting my garage,all in semi gloss. Ceiling and top half of walls are going to be white, bottom half of the walls will be grey with a 2 inch black, 2 inch white, 4 inch blue,2 inch white, 2 inch black stripe combo seperating the white and grey on the wall. I've painted the ceiling and I'm about ready to hit the walls but I want make sure I do this right.

I had planned on painting slightly more than half of the walls white, taping off for the grey and then painting the grey and slightly overlapping the white and then taping and doing the stripes.

Question is, if I paint the top half in two coats of semi gloss white, and then paint the bottom grey , will I see ridge lines from where the white stopped and the grey slightly overlaps? Should I just paint the entire wall white and then do the grey?

Seriously, you might be able to see an edge if you tape, but if you plan on overlapping, why tape the white, you will have a less sharp edge that way.

Gray over white, you should be fine. Think of it this way, primer is usually white, and you don't see that through the top color, so you'll be alright. You may have to just hit the gray with two coats to make sure the white is covered fully.

But, be warned. I just painted my garage last night, satin white. Before I painted it was an old, tired, probably faded white or light beige color. I checked it out this morning and it looks like ****. Where the original tape lines are (under the original light beige paint) is much more white than the non-taped areas. The non-taped areas look a little yellow. There was even a water stain on the wall from when I was cutting tile that is showing through the new white (two coats). Basically the walls looks like a big grid. It looks like ****, but as Charles said, it's just a garage. It is brighter and cleaner than what it was and it's going to get dinged and dented so it'll do.

You'll want to wet sand the entire wall and then roll at least two coats of clear over the top. LOL!

After primer take a chalk line and snap a line where the middle of the 4" blue stripe will be. Paint both the white and grey almost to that chalk line. Since it's almost, it will naturally feather itself out and you won't see a line once you paint the blue stripe. You will probably see lines at the edges of your other stripes though.

I'm wrapping up something similar on my walls. Should be done with the stripe tonight.

I have always been an advocate of painting garages and workshops with a darker color below the "beltline", usually blue or green. This will tend to hide dirt and stains that inevitably happen when working in a garage as stuff gets kicked up against walls from the floor, vehicles and machines.

Thanks all for the tips...the white semi did not leave any apparent lines. I'm going to start the grey today.

Also, I'm looking for the stripe to be Ford blue. Whats the best way to get Home Depot to match this in Behr Paint...does anyone know of a Behr color that matches pretty close?

I'd paint my garage in Gulf livery, but it's mostly bare block so I'll settle for leaving it as-is, until I figure out how much it will cost me to re-roof it the way I'd like.

It's my understanding that, to avoid a ridge at the color separation the tape should be removed while the paint is still wet. Tends to flatten it out.

Well,
I got the line dividing the white and grey taped up tonight and put a light coat of white on the one edge to seal the tape before I paint the grey tomorrow (Pics below). My new Dewalt laser line level made staying level real easy.

I do believe that the first color is closer to the "ford" blue. However, I kind of like the second color myself!

First coat of grey went on this morning. It adds alot of color (or at least contrast) to the scheme...the all white was starting to freak me out.

You can take something in to Home Depot that's Ford blue and they will custom mix a color that matches it. You're not stuck with the colors they already have mix formulas for.

Problem is I do not have anything here that is Ford Blue...I could print it from my computer but I do not trust the computer and printer to replicate it.


Second coat of grey is done and tape is removed....I'm real pleased with the sharpness of the lines. Only one or two bleed through spots that can be touched up.

On the Ford Blue. Go to an auto parts store and buy a rattle can of Ford Blue, take the cap to paint store to have a color match made.
Return or find a use for the rattle can.

OK. Got my stripes done and I thought I'd share. I think they turned out great. Only minor bleed through in a couple of locations that I need to touch up. Also got all my flourescent lights up which you can see...place is super bright now. Next step is to buy the cabinets and paint them and install them.
