Hi all, been lurking and gathering ideas here for a bit, and now that the summer is finally here, i want to re-do the garage. I have been slowly working on it for a while, so its not a disaster, but its not painted or anything, although it does have drywall on the walls. Its about a 10' x 20' and has an unfinished ceiling, where i currently have a lot of items stored in the ceiling. I have had an idea to build a closet in the corner and put the bikes and lawnmower in there and have a work bench across the back of the garage with some cabinets above the bench, and then if theres room storage on top of all that. as well, i plan on building storage shelves in a "U" shape around the front half of the garage above the garage door.

So, as the title states, post up your pics and ideas for me!!

Thanks! :beer::bounce:

Sounds like you've got a good start. Since floor space is what you need most, get everything off the floor. Put everything that has to sit on the floor on wheels. Use a shed for lawn stuff, bikes, toys, etc...

Here's another thread with same theme....

thanks, i saw that thread earlier and saved a bunch of pics out of it for ideas!

we have a shed, but its full of other projects, so the bikes and the few yard tools have to stay in the garage...:headscrat

Hey again. If there is enough room above the garage door that is the best place for less used items and doesnt cut into work area at all. I used to have a 13x22 at my old house and thats what I did. Then next thing is put "Thin" shelves for paint and oil etc on the side walls at the door end. A well planned out bench overhead cabinets and storage above that should work out to plenty of storage. I dont have any pics from that old garage sorry.

thats what i plan on doing, is moving that shelf at tha back of the garage to over the garage door and making it a "U" shape to wrap around the sides of the garage as well. And then put a proper workbench in the back of the gharage and put those cabinets over the work bench. The paint and such is going to hazardous waste the next time we go, as its quite old.

If it was me, I would definitely look at getting the ceiling done, then you could hang some storage stuff from the ceiling. If you look around, you'll see what I'm talking about I think. It's called overhead storage or something like that. They're almost like raftings that bolt to the ceiling. Depending on how often you use the bikes, they can go up there, but if you use them a lot, I wouldn't suggest it.
That would clear up a lot of floor space to where you could paint the walls possibly. Then you could look at building you a workbench in the corner, and just put the mower in a shed in the backyard if you wanted. Might cost you 50 bucks for a shed like the one we have here, but it has all of the garden stuff in ours.

Is this a detached structure? i know that it will compromise wall space but you might consider installing a window. The space is awfully claustrophobic especially if you are in there working in the cold with the door closed.

i dont really plan on doing the ceiling, its a rental garage, so im just looking for simple stuff to do, like painting and such

I think you did great with what you have.
Thanks

The garage functions mainly as a detailing space for my car

I was able to get a buddy help me install two 4 foot florescent lights and with the garage door closed the light is as good as day time in there, if not better. I was able to get an old radio working and some old speakers in each corner of the garage so i can use that radio instead of the one in my car. If I can get it painted this year I'd be thrilled.

I wish we had a double garage just so that there would be more room to spread the stuff out in, but this keeps the useless stuff down to a minimum

Going to resurrect this old thread...

So since my car is not at home tonight, I decided to put the van in the garage. Its tight, but it fits!

(In case anybody is wondering, that is black tape over cardboard on the garage door tracks. With the van, there is only about an inch total width to spare with the mirrors out, so this way, if I do touch the garage tracks with the mirrors, they just fold back, and the cardboard and duct tape keep the mirrors from getting scratched.)

The main problem is getting the back of the van in the area in front of the work bench, and beside the bike closet, as the closet sticks out too much to allow the van to go straight back.

I plan on reversing the work bench and the bike closet at the back of the garage, and spinning the bike closet so that the bikes go in the other way, so that it isn't as deep. I also plan on putting my saw under the work bench when I do that, so its not out in the way like it is now. AND, the garden tools on the wall need to go into the shed. But that requires work on the shed first.

I also want to paint the garage, but have no idea when I will be able to do that. Need to take a van load or two of stuff to the dump that is just accumulating in the garage.

The work never ends!
