Hi all.. I saw posts (probably old, too new to remember to chk that)... about ladders being too expensive..

I recently just bought a new house and the ladder is the original ladder to the house... but unlike my previous which had a straightup the wall ladder making it useless (I weigh too much to consider usign that attic).

In new house the attic is decent... but the ladder was cracked by a mover who weighed barely 150pds. anyway, the ladder was supoosedly inspected and repaired..and its obvious that it wasnt sufficent.

However i doubt that the repairer will replace it with a proper ladder..
The existing ladder is barely good enough for a kid.

But I foudn that a proper metal ladder would be under $200 not including labor. To me thats not expensive if the attic is otherwise worthwhile.
If its not, then of course the ladder is a waste of $$ .. but even so, in my new house the laadder is needed per various repairmen (electric, cable, etc).. would still need to get up there.

I consider this new ladder cheaper than the injuries that can result from this.

For me, if the the attic is like my previous house, I will never consider using it.
But if its like my moms house or even the ones I grew up living under... different story.

Moms attic and even the one at my childhood home were so big that I in fact used them as a clubhouse...and they were litterally good enough to be used as high end attics.

My current place, I cant even go up the ladder to verify if the attic is even worth using... I am going soley by 'workmen' who were able to get up there, stated it was decent and usuable.

Note Ive had workmen say my previous house was usuable but I already knew it wasnt.. Too many say what you want to hear and not the facts..
The previous houses ladder was 2x4 and heavy construction so it could litterally hold my weight the last time I tried to go up it... but not since.

I do have a very strong ladder I can use to temporarily go up there to at least loook around.

Will do that before ever spending $$ to fix the ladder.

If you ever plan to use the attic and must use a ladder to get to it... definately consider replacing whatever was there when house was built..

If you can use the attic via a door from a interior room (one of my dads house you could go into attic from a 2nd story bedroom master closet).. He never once used the attic ladder and a later owner actually removed it and secured the space and rebuilt the area so as to use the space for storage..
