Warrantying Items through Amazon?

I was just pondering this. Amazon obviously sells many tools from brands with lifetime warranties, as well say coffee makers that might have a 2 year warranty.

I've dealt with companies before that when it came to warrantying a defective product say you have to return the item to where you bought it. Amazon's return policy is 30 days.

So you say have a ratchet that locked up, does anyone have experience with whether amazon has a way to warranty these types of products? Ship you a new one?
Always had great experiences, but thinking this may be one area they fault short when it comes to tool buying?

Warranties are rarely handled by any retailer after the initial return period. Costco is the only exception, and maybe Sears for Craftsman stuff.

I'd send an email to amazon to get a clear answer. You can also find a lot on amazon that is not sold by amazon or is sold through amazon making the waters muddier for you lol. Just check with amazon directly.

Gearwrench generally tells you can warranty at virtually any retailer, or you can send the item to them. I wonder if Amazon would swap a GW product?

This is not a tool related warranty issue but should give you an idea of how they handle warranty claims. I had to warranty a watch that failed just after Amazon's 30 day policy and Amazon gave me the number to the manufacturer's warranty hotline instead. I contacted the manufacturer, sent the watch to them, and had a new one within a week or two.

You'll have to deal with the manufacturer directly after the 30 days is up or try to get your warranty processed through someone that sells that line of tools such as Fastenal, Grainger, a tool truck, etc. I had Fastenal warranty an Armstrong ratchet and Gearwrench wrench recently. It took about ~2 weeks to get the replacements in but at least I didn't have to spend money on shipping by dealing with the manufacturer directly.

What you said mirrors exactly what the Amazon rep told me.

I was just trying to learn since Amazon is a place that sells tool lines (like fastenal, granger, etc) if they'd also warranty tools. But from speaking with the rep, and reinforce with what you've said, after 30 days its through the manufacturer.

Just a shame because when it comes to customer service and quick dealings Amazon can be pretty great. Would be happy to add them to a list for places to be able to warranty tools when need be.

Plenty of places will handle warranty for stuff they will. REI recently pissed me off because I bought a Leatherman there specifically because at the time they'd warranty it for the duration of the 25-year warranty, and last time I swapped one they told me "Oh, we changed our policy, we now only handle warranties for a year, so we'll give you this one but that's it." :mad:

Many places, like Advance, will warranty stuff for at least GW as others have said. Hell, even Ace will warranty Craftsman, and I don't think they're particularly related to Sears.

But, Amazon sure ain't one of them. Although you could probably order a new one and return your broken one under that order within 30 days, provided it's still sold and they'll issue a refund rather than a replacement.
