Welcome to GJ, its a great place...

Also, OP needs to go to User CP (control panel) in the menu bar across the top of the GJ page, and edit his profile to include a location (So. Illinois is sufficient) as it helps in the future when you ask a question that may be weather or code related.

Gallons per square foot ? I have never been asked that question yet.

I am assuming you are asking gallons per year ? I have customers burning anywhere from 200 - 15,000 gallons per year.

I guess it's a stupid question, too many variables (location, shop size/hight, insulation etc.) to take into account.

I just got curious after seeing the different sizes of oil storage being used.

You size the heater to the building like you would any heater. The heater BTU will determine how much fuel in Gal/hr you are going to burn (running continuous). mine is rated at 1.44 gal per hr and it is 200K btu. with it cycling on and off, it probably averages close to 1 gal per hour actual consumption. Of course this depends on outside air temp/heat loss, etc that determines how much the heater cycles.

It all depends on whether you run it 24/7 or have a climate with wild temp swings and possibly you only use the building part of the time and don't have an issue with the building getting cold when you are not using it.

In any case, its a lot of oil and you will need lots of friends or good sources of oil. I was just given a gallon by one co-worker today, another gave me about 3 gals. I collect it all year.

I usually find the oil is hot enough when I drain it that I don't need a waste oil heater. LOL. It's just about like call some thing a Hot Water Heater instead of a water heater.

Shoot me an email to [email protected] with your info. I will try to get a hold of them for you and see if that will help.
