Water hose quick disconnects?

I have to imagine some of you ladies and gents out there get creative with water hoses. Has anyone had good luck with and/or can suggest a quick disconnect setup for a water hose?

I would like to keep a raw water washdown hose on my boat but the location it threads into the water source is kind of a pain. It would be awesome if I could stow the hose in the helm and have a pigtail setup with a quick disconnect.

I use the quick connects they sell at Lowe's. Work great for me, kind of like an air hose coupler.

I was actually surprised, living in Germany, it seems everyone uses quick disconnects on their hoses. Most sprinklers or nozzles only have the QD on them. So naturally my hoses here have them and I have fallen in love. Typically the hoses themselves are sold without any fittings, and you just buy the fittings. I've only have a few minor issues with them(dropped them and broke the plastic), one end is restricted when disconnected just like an air hose.

As for recommendations for brands or anything, I've got nothing. I would say something with metal would be better as they would be less likely to break.

This may not be applicable to your situation...but I needed a hydrant on my deck to plug in a hose and due to the location I did not have room for a male spigot sticking out so I installed one of these:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01C2JYZLG/?tag=atomicindus08-20

So instead of a hydrant sticking out of the wall, you have a flap with a female fitting with a built in spring loaded shut off. To make water flow, you stick the included male fitting into the female and twist. That male fitting threads onto a hose.

I may not be making it clear how it works. Once it's set up, you just walk up to the thing with your hose, plug it in, and your hose immediately has water pressure on it.

I got one because my spot was so tight where it had to go, but really it looks 10 times better than having a spigot sticking out. It's frost free and comes in different lengths depending on the wall depth.

Dramm brand real brass. The big box ones that are aluminum annodized to look like brass are a trick and will corrode after a year of use on land.

I've not had issues with the big box pieces. I've got some going on 5 years now.

I ordered one of these off ebay for my HVLP hose. Didn't want plastic, and didn't want anything low flow with a pinhole opening. Haven't tried it yet, but just wanted to throw it out there for you.

I bought mine at menards. Think for a 5 piece set it's about 10 bucks. Probably not super high quality but have lasted for a few years now with no issues. I have 3 hose bibs with hose reels and a bunch of attachments all with quick disconnects on them. Also have a wash sink that I put a hose bib next to and use a short washing machine hose and sprayer on to clean things, these all have quick disconnects also. I also have the high pressure ones for my power washer hoses and attachments.

My favorite water related products are the ones from Gardena. They have 2 product lines, the regular and the Premium one. The Premium quick disconnect are made from some metal parts, very high quality!

Dramm, and several other compatible brands, work fine. Not perfect...but some of mine have been in service for decades! No regrets.

I've used the good quality brass ones, the ones that work just like air hose disconnects. The only problem I encounter, here in AZ, is if you leave two hoses connected with them outside for any length of time, they become hell to disconnect. The sleeve gets so it won't slide back without using some pliers.

Are you applying Silicon grease to the O-Ring, they promote it on their site but you don't have to purchase it from them you can get it anywhere. If you haven't done it try it to see if that will make the decoupling easier

Edit: I reread your post it's the ring that gets stuck

I haven't been, but will definitely try it. I generally use Syl-Glide, which is a silicone product and made specifically for O-ring assemblies.

Be warned, that if you have those vacuum breaker/anti-siphon devices attached to your faucet, many of the quick disconnects are not compatible with them directly. The valve inside of the quick connect pushes up and its OD is often larger than the ID of the anti-siphon thing. One solution is to extend the connection pass the device just a bit with a flex hose or y-pipe extension.

I'm not crazy about the flex extension that I use because the sunlight has discolored and cracked the plastic pieces. I'll probably try a short all metal unit like in this pack next.

I have these on everything, they are great. Browse around the website and youtube channel, spend your life savings on things you didn't think you needed...

Yup, I was going to suggest the same. OG carries stainless and brass. He is insanely particular about everything he offers. I would go with stainless since you mentioned the boat.

Ace hardware sells a set in stores that has male and female ends that works really well. It comes with one end for house end of hose and the other end has a cutoff and they work really well. Solid brass, well made. The "O" ring seal in the cutoff end will come out if you release pressure without a ****** in it. The "O" ring is a R12 or 115 standard "O" ring when you loose it. I have bought several sets and have them on each hose around the house. About $20 if I remember correctly.

I've been using the Gardena plastic ones for 25-30 years. They don't last that long tho...

But the hand grip nozzles do last several years when abused by my lazy self. When you buy another one, they include more connectors.

My guess is the nozzles last 5-8 years. The connectors last much longer and I have a pile of old faded ones.

BTW, the little O-rings on the connectors seem to go first - a trip to the hardware store fixes that, but I have lots of working connectors in the pile.

The brand of plastic ones that is green & black (can't recall the name) is not as good as the gardena ones.

I looked at Eley a few years ago but looked like actually rebranded imports. What model are you using?

I've currently got the quick connects from the hardware store. They are holding up, but if they wear out ill go get some from Eley. The key is to have them on EVERYTHING. Each hose gets one at each end, every sprayer, everything. It makes it so easy to swap out ends, add extensions, etc.

I got a set of the Eley for free in my hose reel purchase. They are built nice, but way to bulky and they get expensive quick if outfitting several hoses.

I recommend the ones from Obsessed Garage. They're cheaper and slim. Regardless of the material, don't expect any brand to last forever. Buy a couple extra.

Stainless look prettier, but will also resist corrosion longer. It does get worse if I leave the brass male and female connectors attached outside for any length of time. They can require a thorough cleaning in just a few months if I do that.

I hate using hoses without them. I've tried a variety of big-box ones, plastic and metal, and they've all lasted a couple of seasons at best. Worst was Tractor Supply- the ball bearings that the slidy piece moves on had a lousy chrome plating that rusted after one season and rendered them unusable.

In 2016 I bought about 10 sets of Dixon connectors to put on all my faucets/hoses/attachments, and I don't think I've had to replace a single one yet.
