Water in compressor motor?

Ok folk's here's the deal. I bought 2 craftsman 30 gallon compressors on CL the other day I runs and the other doesn't. This is kind of where I'm stuck.

The one that runs has a good crank, rods, and piston's but had some water in it and there is light rust in the bore and around the piston's, nothing heavy though as the rings are still very free.
The other one looks to have been run out of oil as the rod's and crank are pretty tore up. there is no scoring in either bore and has VERY light rust at the top of the bore and around the ring's on the piston's.

Just wondering if there is a way I can get rid of the rust in the cylinder and around the piston's and make one good compressor motor out of the 2?

Can't see what you see, but the one with light rust and no other damage I'd clean up really good with light oil. If it didn't clean well enough, pull the piston and lightly hone the cyl, then put it back and run it. Broken parts are too spendy from Sears. Maybe it is a Campbell Hausefield and parts would be more reasonable?

Well I paid $20 for the 2 of them and some of the plastic shroud is missing from both. The only writing on them states they are 4hp 30 gallon.
I didn't even think of honing the cylinder (duh)! But as for the rings and top of piston?

Just run it. Sounds like surface rust.

Yep, change the oil, run it, possibly change the oil again after its hot, and keep running it.

Run it like you were breaking in a new one, open the tank valve so it never builds pressure and just let it run for 20 or 30 minutes, then close the valve and see how well it pumps up.

I'd clean up as much of the rust you see and run as others have said. You get a feel as time goes on.

Well thanks for the help fellas. I tore the comp motor all the way down and clean it all up, Also got some gasket material to replace all the stuff I tore up ;) I out it all back together last night and added fresh oil and it ran like a champ. Ran all the way up to 120 PSI and shut off, Let sit for about an hour and no leak down. Drained the tank and put 'er away.

So for about $35 Ive got a 30 gallon/ 4hp compressor that seems like it works just as good as new.
