Waterproof Tape?

I am replacing my shower door. It is a 25 1/2" wide door with a hinge jamb and a striker jamb. Each jamb are made of two extrusions, one of which slides into the other. This results in a lap joint that is fairly tight. It's not tight enough to keep water out, I don't believe. But it is to tight to hold even a minimal bead of caulk.
Is there some kind of waterproof tape, preferably transparent, that I could run down the joint to make it waterproof. Since it's facing the inside of the shower it wouldn't be visible. Just something water tight and long lasting.

Thanks for the quick reply, ducksface. The joint I'm trying to waterproof is inside the shower. I think either Vaseline or silicone would wash out, wouldn't they?

Are you spraying water against the door or jambs? My house is 19 years old and has what sounds like the same door kit. No issues at all with no caulk. Heck I can see daylight where the jambs are screwed to the tile. Still no issues.

I think Duckface was talking about clear bathroom grade silicone caulk.

The Vaseline is temporary.
It is just there to keep the caulk from gluing the door shut.

Yep, I've used this method to make a nice tight water/dust proof seal on the airbox lids of ATVs and dirtbikes.
