Hmmmm...........

Never knew those were called that, or that there was a specific tool for them.

Learn something every day, I guess.

I'm with bob. Didn't know such a tool existed. I thought this was the one application for an adjustable wrench. Now I can look for a new tool.

This is why I need to limit my time on this board. Yet another tool that I had NO IDEA I needed. You are all enablers!

I bought a 14 pc. Snap on set from the retired diesel mechanic down the street. I am quite confident i will never use them but they are cool. I thought i may use them for large square drive bolts....unless they make a tool specifically for them too.

They do: 8-point sockets! You must get a full set.

I just bought a 3-piece set of 3/8" Dr FD-6, FD-8, FD-10 Snap-On's on eBay for $20 shipped. I already have an engraved FD-8 and the quality is amazing!!

This is one tool that I won't use very often but I'm glad that I have them on hand when needed.

Anyone have a list of what sizes are available?

I've seen them, but was never interested. I can see where they could be handy, but my feeling is they don't go large enough for 90% of the stuff I do.

There doesn't seem to be too much info out there. It seems 3/8" Dr stops at 3/4" but I'm not sure?

Hopefully someone will have a list of available sizes.

Snap On lists theirs as going from 3/8 to 25/32 in 3/8 drive and in 1/2 drive as 7/8, 29/32, and 15/16. (Being able to quickly look up size ranges, part numbers, and set contents and set part numbers is one of the reasons I really prefer to keep tool catalogs on hand)

Personally I put 'em in with a wrench (either normal or adjustable).

Dang I have had some of these for years and used them quite a few times and never knew that was what they were called. Mine are made by Bonney I think.

Huh. You learn something every day.

I need a 22mm socket like this for certain fork caps on certain vintage Suzuki motorcycles. I ended up cutting a window in a 13/16 spark plug socket and hogging it out with a Dremel enough to fit, but I'm about 99.9% certain a 7/8" weatherhead socket would accomplish the same with a lot less slippage and angst.

I have two that sat in the tool box for 20 years unused. Then I needed to take a square pipe plug out of a manifold. The weatherhead was just the ticket!

That is why I love buying tools and trying to be as complete as possible. When I run into a situation I'm always hoping that I have the right tool for the job.

They're very handy working on trucks or equipment, but they're not completely necessary. Crowsfeet do the same thing just as well, and in some cases better (they're smaller and fit in more angles than weatherheads). I have an old Cornwell set to 15/16" and use them frequently on hydraulics and air.

A week or two back I'd have had to remove an auxiliary cooling unit and part of the intake to pull the discharge fitting off an air compressor if I didn't own the weatherheads. Saved me time, made me money. Any guys working on diesel without them, they're very good to have around.

I have a full snap-on set and use them infrequently. Several times though they have been the ONLY tool that would work for a hard to get at weatherhead fitting on a Detroit Deisel engine, when adjustable, open end, crowfoot, and so on wouldn't work.

I agree not always necessary but often appreciated, and occasionaly the perfect and only tool for the job.
