As I was rummaging around for a pic of the mill vice when I received it, the only picture I could find was the one I posted above recently. The received condition, for some reason as I look back now, really surprised me. So I thought I would post a before and after shot.

Before (when the machinery movers dropped it off)

After....

Thanks for stopping by.

I have got a DoAll mill that needs a some work.... what do you say... all the beer and breakfast tacos you can drink and eat for a resto job? [emoji51]

The mill turned out great. I may have missed it but where did you get the new DRO you put on the Mill?

Thanks Duker! Surprisingly, I'm half tempted to take you up on your offer. :headscrat I get a lot of satisfaction out of refurbishing stuff.

I got the DRO from DRO PROS. (<--- click on the link) The units they sell are guaranteed for 6 years. They also have all the videos you need to install the units. Word of warning, they are kinda slow but pretty thorough so plan on some popcorn and some sitting time.

So far I am very happy with the purchase.

Hope that helps sir!

Dan,

Two years since you started this thread.

Saturday morning here, 09.30 and just for some weird reason, clicked into it for the the first time.

The street name and sales brochure pic got my interest instantly.

I have 34 pages to go, and it may take a day or two as I read all the entries unlike some.

Looking forward to the rest.

If a big green Mill shows up on your driveway at Odd Acres with a coupon good for free beer.... mystery solved! [emoji106]. I like you, enjoy refurbishing equipment, although at the moment I have acquired too many projects and as I try and plan my time they keep falling further down the list as my wife keeps slipping something knew in the mix!

Thanks for link on the DRO. I bookmarked it as I will need to add a DRO to the mill and a Lathe. Hopefully that will be sometime this year.

Duker, if a big green mill shows up in my driveway, I will be like a kid at Christmas. And the neighbors will think I'm starting a machine shop.

I'm anxious to follow along on your thread to see what you do. Love your place.

And your welcome on the DRO info. Any time I can help a fellow GJ'er spend money, well it's a good day. I consider it payback.

Ya know, sometimes what appears to be some of the most mundane tasks, turn out to be a project. Case in point, I want to hang my Starret decimal equivalent chart.

45985292725_73da2a2d51_b.jpg

Now normally one would take an ordinary screw or nail and insert said object into one's wall and hang the poster. Not here at Odd Acres! Nosireebob, not in my lifetime you're not. :headshake Since this building is made from galvanized sheet metal, punching a hole in it would subsequently defeat the purpose of all of the hard work previously done to said building to waterproof it. That, plus the fact the walls start to arch towards the roof five feet from the ground. Hanging it that low would require me to get on my creeper to read the wonderful information on said chart. After much thought, I decided that wasn't going to be an option. (We really need a sarcasm font)

What to do, what to do....... I know, I'll make a crucifix to hang the sucker. :wtf: Now you're probably wondering why I chose a crucifix for this project. I chose that option because I failed on my first attempt to hang this chart. In my first attempt, the hanging apparatus was just a 1x2 stick and the chart would flop back and forth in the ever so slightest breeze. So that the chart would present itself and not flop around, I chose option B, the crucifix.

I started out by figuring what I needed for an angle to mount the frame so it would clear the arch and hang high enough. I cut the angle on a scrap piece of 2x4 and mounted it to the wood walls I have.

46175087724_a5c684a089_b.jpg

Then I fabbed the crucifix from 1x2 I had laying around and also made a cleat for the bottom of the frame to be captured. You can see it at the bottom of that frame.

45985297415_55aa214798_b.jpg

Now, NOW I can finally hang my frame.

39935066583_95f7c24f32_b.jpg

So, what would normally take me less than a minute to hang A POSTER FRAME, turned into a two hour project.

46175090544_be3fdb182f_b.jpg

Sometimes I really hate this building.

Thank you for stopping by and those kind words cstmg8.

Dan, you make me feel so much better. I think I'm at five hours to hang a couple of speakers and they still aren't hung.

Bob, anytime I can help, you let me know.

Hey, it takes patience and crucial planning for the correct speaker placement to enjoy quality music. Some things simply cannot be rushed. That's my story and I'm sticking with it.

Very nice job on the wall chart Dan. I have the exact same one but not mounted in a frame, just attached to the wall above my lathe and I have noticed that at times I have to step back to view a certain value. I like the way you angled it downward so that negates having to step back.

Also, shop looks fantastic. I'm sure it is a pleasure to work in there.

Now the way you did that is just so simple and so clever and here I was think why the religious post (pun intended). Again very neatly done.

Thanks Simon! And thank you for those nice comments.

Morning Buddy,

I don't see anything to hate, it looks fantastic from here.
Great looking shop,

Steve:beer:

Thanks Steve, I really appreciate the kind words! The inside of the shop is great for me. It's the actual building that drives me insane sometimes.

OK Dan, I need to know where you got the wire shelf rack on the side of the cabinet that is holding all those spray cans. Also, does your wife know you took it?

Hi Bob! Boy, nothing sneaks by you guys, does it?? :wtf: My wife and I bought that wire rack shelf thingy almost 30 years ago and I think we got it from Menard's or ACE Hardware. An apartment we lived in back then was sorely in need of storage. (Not so much when we decided to move.) The pantry we had had this unit mounted on the door and it was directly over the stairs that led to our apartment. We had so much stuff crammed in there that I was afraid to stand under the pantry in the stairwell for fear I may get crushed. We took this shelf thingy with us when we moved and ever since, it has lived on the side of that cabinet. So yes, the wife knows I have it and with her blessing.

If I ever run into another one, I will let you know.

Thanks for stopping in Mike and it is a true pleasure to work in there now. I just need to buy a new lathe now.

I had to angle that chart out of necessity. You can't tell from the pictures but I had to angle it inward to clear the arch from the building. It just so happens it's easier to read this way and won't collect any schmutz falling out of the air.

Thank you all for stopping by!

Update: Project Birdhouse Diversion

I first saw the plans for this birdhouse just before Christmas as I was perusing the Grizzly catalog. I saw the plans and had to have it. The plans are to give this to my SIL. (It's a long running inside joke) This took about three months to make in between head colds, being crazy busy at work, traveling to check up on my folks in Florida and just general life stuff.

Sooo after the first of the year and after the plans arrived in the mail, I went about buying some cedar. The plans call for two 1" x 12" x 48" boards. Unfortunately, the only size I could get was 1" x 6" x 48" so I decided to glue two 1"x 6"'s together.

The picture below is after running the boards through a planer and a jointer. At this point, the boards are exactly 3/4" thick.

40494153083_c5c9e36e60_b.jpg

So I borrowed a friends biscuit joiner and got busy.

40494152733_e3f3860066_b.jpg

After gluing in the biscuits I glued the sides and clamped it up. These clamps not only clamped the boards together but they also held them flat.

40494152063_d0a1fb0536_b.jpg

Next was layout time.

33583908708_00bdfc9bb7_b.jpg

33583908198_0a308f1687_b.jpg

The front and back pieces were cut on my table saw with the aid of a taper sled jig. The other pieces were cut using a band saw.

After the free form pieces were cut, I set up a drum sander to smooth the outer edges from the band saw cuts.

33583907228_e860eba63a_b.jpg

Then I hand sanded the portions of the parts that the drum sander could not reach.

Time for assembly..... Here are some of the pieces mocked up before gluing and nailing.

40494147683_8035427956_b.jpg

40494146553_93aedb735e_b.jpg

Some more pieces glued and nailed.

40494145783_14aa3089cb_b.jpg

I dovetailed the bottom piece which is held in with screws for cleaning out old nests and garbage. Here it is after a run in with some boiled linseed oil.

40494144973_2d6013405c_b.jpg

And finished today with final assembly with the eyes glued in.

Hello Chassis man, I am honored that you chose this thread to make your first post. You are welcome for those links and if you should have any questions regarding those, please feel free to ask.

That is badass Dan! I wanna make one!

Bret

Hi Bret! Thanks for stopping by. Go for it!!

It was a great diversion to help get my mind off of work. If I had to do it over again (probably will) I have a couple of things I would do differently. Other than that, it was fun! The plans can make two different bird houses; the moose theme shown and also a bear theme. Here's the link >>> Click here.

Hey Duker! Thanks for stopping by.

No biggie really. Many years ago, when my wife and I were still dating, my SIL had a party, lots of people. Anyway, when you arrived she would slap a Post-it note on your back with the name of a person, place or thing. Your objective was to walk around and ask other people questions to figure out what was on the Post-it note. It was a great ice breaker and helped people mingle. When the party was finally over, my SIL and I were the only two who could not figure out what was on the Post-it. Hers was Bullwinkle and mine was Godzilla. To this day I call her Bull and she calls me Zill. We occasionally find a Bullwinkle (or moose) or Godzilla item that we have to give to each other. Hence this birdhouse.

I'm going to have to prepare myself for what might find its way into our mailbox after she receives this bird house. Not sure if I have enough room for another Godzilla clock, walking toy, slippers.......:wtf:

Van Maintenance Time

While reading another GJ member's thread, I was reminded that I needed to do some maintenance on my lovely wife's van. One of those maintenance items was flushing the cooling system. I was supposed to do this little chore at 100,000 miles but my "to do" list has somehow been misplaced. :headscrat I needed to get this done before the stupid hot weather gets here. The van is just a tick over 125,000 miles.

Anyway, I was ready for the sludge to begin seeping out of the drain plug when I loosened it. To my utter surprise, the fluid was totally clear. In all the years that I have been flushing cooling systems, this is the first time I have EVER seen coolant look like fresh anti-freeze.

I know Chrysler advertises this coolant as 100,000 mile protection but wow. This is the first drain.

40761253223_e2b52c7391_b.jpg

I guess it doesn't take much to amuse me nowadays. I know it doesn't look like much in there and that's because the plastic restaurant tote I was using for a drain pan had a crack in it. I hate it when that happens. I probably had a gallon of coolant on the floor making its was towards the back before I realized I had a problem.

After this, it was time to rotate the tires, top off the fluids, change the wiper blades (monsoon season is coming), change the oil and filter, wash, clean and recharge the K&N air filter, replace the cabin air filter (nasty) and vacuum the interior.

I'm tired! :Violent:

Next up, time to work on the Cobra.

Ah, springtime in the desert......

The pictures truly do not do the plants any justice. They are much more vibrant.

I'm impressed by the look of the coolant, I've never drained one and had it look that nice. What all is on the list for the cobra? I spent about 4 hours this past Sunday getting mine ready for the summer season, it has rained since and is forecast for the next 8 days or so.

Hi JB

Next up is to repair the door lock mechanism. I tried to drive it to work the other day and kinda got stuck inside; the door wouldn't open. I had to get out "Dukes of Hazard" style.

Then make brackets for the hidden hinges for the trunk so I can install some gas lift supports. My head hurts from holding it up. :headscrat

Then oil and filter change and re-torque the header bolts. I just put a new style gasket on there that's not supposed to ever blow out. I have had issues with that in the past. So far, so good.
