Bit of advice from you pros....

I have to install a new gauge and top outlet valve on an underground fuel tank. This is set down approx 3 foot below ground with access through a man hole cover. I need to remove two mild steel hex bushes (2" BSP socket) in order to install the gauge and valve.

I could add two 16" 3/4" extensions to my tool collection but I doubt they would ever be used again. Would I be able to get two shorter extensions welded to each end of some box section or would it fail? I imagine the bushes are rusted on pretty well.....:headscrat

No. Take ONE extension. Cut it in half and weld a pipe in the middle. Pipe will handle the twisting better than square, and even better than the solid extension. Since you're ruining one end on each side, why buy two extensions?

We weld sockets onto an extension which is then welded on to a breaker bar for our desert race cars. This way we don't ever have to worry about losing the socket out in the middle of no where and we don't spend precious time pulling out all of the tools on the side of the race course.

It would hurt me to do that to a tool, but good idea!

If its a purpose built tool, why? We used to cut the 13/16 end off a lug nut cross wrench and weld in a pipe extension for the extra deep 17-21" wide race tire rims back in the super mod days (knock offs were not allowed...), and some had the "handles" bent at a 45 for added clearance if you were in the bottom lug...

It's not usually like you are taking a tool from a complete set to do these point specific tools...

love some homeade tools. i read an article where item specific tools are zip tied on the roll cages of sand buggies so the tool is in the right place for the task.
