Welders third hand

Hi everyone. New member. Been lurking and learning. Has anyone built an all copper welders third hand? I need some ideas to build one or a couple. Anyone got any picture's?

The tip of mine is copper (actually an repurposed soldering iron tip). I don't see the need to make the entire thing out of copper. Especially the weight.

Thanks for the links guys. The reason I figured on making them out of copper is so they have some weight to them.And they won't arc. I already bought some scrap rounds for the main bodies. I bought some 5/16" copper rods for the legs.Should come out nice

Thanks for the links guys. The reason I figured on making them out of copper is so they have some weight to them.And they won't arc. I already bought some scrap rounds for the main bodies. I bought some 5/16" copper rods for the legs.Should come out nice

Copper will definitely arc. Its an excellent conductor. That is why they use it as a backing material when welding steel because it acts as a heat sink and helps cool the puddle faster. It gets very hot very fast.

Find a derelict house & repurpose part of the solid copper grounding rod. I found one in the garage here that's about 7ft long by 5/8in.

I made a few third hand types from rebar some years ago and gave them away. I really should make some more to keep and use myself.

A few years ago a friend asked if I needed a couple of large metal electrical boxes.
I went to look and found he had 2 24"x72" commercial power distribution cabinets,
they were free so I loaded them up. What made this deal sweet was each cabinet
had 3 1 1/2"x 3/8"x68" copper buss bars in them.
I made a bunch of copper back up bars,I gave 4 or 5 to my son to use at his body shop
and I've still got a half dozen left in my tool box, there great for filling holes, just push the copper paddle up to the back side of the hole then fill the other side with weld.
Some of my paddles I've contoured to use on curved panels and some I've bent to fit other places , they sure make filling holes easier.
