So I see welding mask prices all over the place and cant figure out the differences. I own a Miller auto flash that cost me about $100 on Amazon. I bought Miller thinking it would be good quality, but from time to time it does not flash shut. It does it about 1 in every 50-100 welds, but I see a star for a day or two when it happens.

Not sure if something is not set right, or if I just need to clean it more often and better, but I am not sure the safest stuff to use to clean the lens. I have it just sensitive enough so it will not darken if I look at a light in my garage.

Other than that I am happy with it. When I do hours of welding I get soaked in sweat since the plastic it is made out of in no way deflects the heat. I don't think I will find a helmet in my price range that would do much better. Can someone explain these things to me though so I know why the prices are so high on some.

Also, what are considered the better masks, and why? And are there any I can go down to shade 5 with for my oxy setup? My current one only goes down to 7.

Thanks for any help you guys can offer.

Check out millerwelds.com. That forum has a great amount of information, good set ups too. Also good for techniques with detail for special situations.

There are many lids that go to shade 5. My favorite is a speedglas. We have some newer Jackson's and Lincoln's that do as well. All are in the $250.00 and up range

I have a Miller 9400 which is great, I also have a pair of Jackson with Baldor technology. I like them as well.

I do a fair bit of tig welding, and was given a Speedglas 9100 as a gift. Its been absolutely fantastic! Covers full range, has tons of adjustment, can be used for grinding, and has a very wide range of view. Overall the best lid i have ever used.

Any Speedglass 9000 series or 9100 series are the best, longest lasting hoods out there. Some of my guys dont like the 9100 headgear. Its a new design. We have 9001x hoods that get used 7 days a week 10-12 hrs a day that have been in service for 12-13 years. I will never buy a different brand hood for production use. We have over 100 of them in use in our shop. We tried several styles before settling with the Speedglass.
