Thanks, I am pretty happy about it.
The strong hand clamps ar $150-$200 each!!! They are not that hard to copy. Just have to turn a round bar down and machine out a slot for the modified bessy clamp to fit into and tig it up.

Really? There's a bunch of smaller sizes available as well.

For the record, I plan to make my own clamps just like you are planning.

Ok, this is a long story. The idea is to prevent the ground wires from becoming current carrying conductors for welding currents. I have metal building, intrerconnected metal benches and grounding to building frame. My benches are electrically grounded but not thru the circuit, I fed them 2 wire and used gfci, they ground thru a welding ground. I have both benches bonded together but if they were not a grounded tool laying on one and grounded tool laying on another could connect thru the ground wires in the cord and pass welding currents.
I have seen this happen when the work leads from welders were moved with the machine, forget to move it and any building wire becomes a pathway and is wayyyy to small, turns red hot instantly.
All this not such a problem in stand alone benches in common garages, any circuit coming to it and any bench really should be electrically grounded. If I had rolling ones would not wire power stuff to them but use a cord for grinders etc.

Behold my heavy-duty welding table :D

IMG_20170128_184335-1024x7682_zps3wxzjuhu.jpg

Space is always a struggle since my 2-car garage takes many forms; woodworking mode, metal/welding mode, auto repair/maintenance mode but most of the days I park two cars in it so that's my excuse for not having a heavy-duty dedicated welding table. For what it's worth the little HF folding welding table is pretty decent and handy.

I can't compete with most of the tables on here, but this is what I slapped together last weekend. I did not want anything too big as I don't do a ton of welding and I also have limited space to put it with all the other cabinets in the shop. It will get some paint when it warms up outside. I might add a few more details here and there too?

I like that, super nice and clean, simple and modest, affordable and will work well. Good basic design which trumps a bunch of add on.

Started on mine this weekend. Top is 60×41 roughly. It will have 14 receivers on it. Not going to run any outlets yet. Here's a few pictures

Not mine, and no affiliation but thought it was worth sharing. Have been window shopping for a used welding table / the materials to build a small one, and this table has be on CL - Chicago for a few weeks now. By my calculations, the top alone weighs 4,500+ lbs. Could make a dozen tables 40 in. x 28 in. out of the top. Still shopping.

http://chicago.craigslist.org/wcl/tld/5989815279.html

MONSTER HUGE WELDING TABLE 80"by 14 FEET 1 1/8"THICK! - $1850 (Around Hillside)
Main part is 80" by 120" (10ft) plus 4 ft side wing attachment a little narrower than the table top.

any info on these would be great....they look like they would work perfectly for what I want. Cheers

Any feedback on those levelling casters?
Do they roll ok with big weight?
I was looking at these ones, i thought the 3" wheel would be better than a 2".

These are nice casters. I used them on a motorcycle chassis jig that I fabricated about 12 years ago and loved them. They are a bit spendy though, but well worth it in my opinion. Easy to level and roll smooth.

Mike.

Here is my chassis jig, it wasn't light by any means but also nowhere near the caster's weight capacities.

Thx
My table will probably land around the 1000 - 1200lbs mark id guess. The top is 500 alone. My floor is generally pretty clean so rocks etc should not hold me up.

This is mine at work, not many good pictures.

The top is 8x3 foot 1" thick 304 stainless, 2 vises, rocket launcher rod holders, Durham parts cab, shop air/110v electrical hose reels and Argon purge line under the the table.
1200lb casters and 4" dia. leveling pads.

I think the cost of building it no including our own labor was about $6000.

Damn, man, that's an awesome top. Did you design it or purchase just like that?

It started out all i wanted was a wood top that i could cut on, then assemble boxes etc on with the help of the Parf dogs.
So i bought a set of plans, i think it was $26

But i could not find a place that could cnc wood. Well i found one place but after couple months of run around. I decided to goto my local Laser company who does a lot of metal cutting for me to get them to make me a jig for my router.
9c4df1796d20ec8f7391bb8da3faba1c.jpg

While i was there i had them give me a quote on a 3/4" steel plate too. I made the weld table the same as the plans as i think the handles and the bigger slots will work nice for bigger C-clamps. The grid on the jig is the same on the weld table so my plan is to have a mdf slab that will sit on top of the weld table and the holes will match so the Longer parf dogs will keep things square and planted. d4f1993396b1da7048a180260f821062.jpg
Rest is history. The aluminium plate was $200 which the one router place was gunna charge me $190
And the steel plate was $800.
They also did 5 different test holes for the aluminuim bushing and the steel plate to make sure i was happy with how tight the Parf dogs and festool bushing fit.
If i can figure out how to post a video i will

Mine is from scrap. The base was for an old log saw. The vice/anvil was a antique store find for $20 and the top is industrial grating I got at a farm sale. I did spend a little for the wheels.

Here is one I'm just about done with. 3/8" plate and 41" tall with casters. It is going to get some brackets for clamps and grinders, drawers for tig consumables and paint.

He's a link to the thread:

Introduction and a Welding Table

Figured I'd update my contribution. My old table is no longer mine, so I made this as a replacement. Here she is, all cleaned off from the latest job. Build thread in my signature.

1-1/4" A36 Blanchard ground both sides. 48" x 120".

This is a 40 x 40 table I built a couple of weeks ago. I purchased the welding top plans off ebay for $29.00. The plans are in .dxf format and I cut them out of 1/4 plate with my plasma table. lots and lots of holes it took forever. My first build on the table was two welding carts. Ill try and post some pics. There is a lot of great ideas on this forum. Would have liked to found it sooner. I bent up a foot pedal box and tried my first attempt at tig welding. I need some more practice, a lot more LOL

O.K I will play,

I'm just getting back into welding fabrication picking up some new tools , first thing I built was the 30x72 table, then my sander grinder and Milwaukee port a band stands . I also bought a harbor freight roll around tool box debadged it and added the Milwaukee decal, :D surprisingly the tool box is not half bad. tough to beat for 340 bucks. also that's a 210 miller syncrowave I also have a 150 spoolmate that is set up for alum wire. I have a evolution 380 on order. Going to be building a larger sander grinder, similar to the ellis. for my next project, I also see a 252 miller wire machine in the future. Time to move the reloading equipment.

Got any details on how you built that?

I don't have any details just kind of winged it, would be happy to give you some dimensions though.

Main frame all made from 3x3x 1/8 sq tube, 2x2 angle iron welded to the top bolted to the main frame , drilled and tapped , caster wheels are all locking from amazon 58 bucks delivered they are really nice with 2 grease fitting each for the price.

they are bolted 3/8 Plate using 3/8 bolts, holes in center tube are thru drilled using a 2 inch hole saw, just for the industrial look. top is 30x72 x 3/8 plate would have went thicker but got a great deal on that piece and it's plenty heavy for what I use it for the table stands 36" tall, all tig welded , rustolem paint with primer, miller decal from ebay
