I just picked up my first welder, and have a few projects in mind. Also need to have a welding table.
We just moved into this house a few months ago, and I am still working on organizing the garage. I just built a nice new 2x4' work bench out of wood. I've been trying to think up some ideas for what I could be using for a welding table, and I thought I would see what input you guys might have. I have a 3 car garage, that has two vehicles (one is a project), and may have a 3rd in the future, so space savings is a high concern.
One idea is to have a metal shop bend up a top for my wood work bench, and I could use it for anything. I wouldn't need the sacrificial top if I did that. It's right by the wall and my tool box though, and it's made of wood, so I'm not sure it would make a good welding bench. It would save space from having to have a separate welding table though, and the metal top would pretty much never need replacing. I'd think it would have to be pretty thick though to make it a good welding table. I'd probably have to make a collapsible shielding or something to protect the walls/tool box/entry door from welding & grinding sparks. It would be handy to have it all in one, though.
Another idea is to make a combination tool cart/welding table. Maybe have a hinged welding surface that folds back off the top to use it around as a tool cart. I'd like to have somethings small to work around my project truck, so it could not be very big.
A third idea is just to make a dedicated welding table, like 2'x3'. Maybe have the hinged top again, with a cutting table surface under the top. Or, forgo the cutting part (don't have a cutter right now) and just make storage underneath for welding stuff.
Any other ideas I should consider?
