My thinking is a large washer would be more surface area to absorb the heat creating less distortion. Also, a large washer would allow vice grips to be clamped on as heat sinks. Just a thought! If the nuts were next to each other, it also wouldn't make a difference because the clocking of the nuts would still cause binding as the weld cooled.
