Welcome from Chicago. I also look forward to learning about daily life in Siberia.

Do you have a large variety of automobile makes in your town?

Where are they manufactured?

Hi!

We have a lot of cars now, I think that each family have a car.

We are used right-hand drive cars from domestic japan market (toyota, honda, nissan, mazda, mitsubishi - much models of thats brands). Now the Japanese manufacturers have opened factories in Russia and many cars began to appear left-hand drive assembled in Russia, for example, Toyota Camry, Land cruiser, RAV4, Mazda 3, 6, Nissan Qashqai, Xtrail and others.

We are used a cars from old domestic plants - VAZ, UAZ, GAZ, KAMAZ.

There are not many cars from the USA in Siberia, mostly Ford made at the plant in St. Petersburg, the Chevrolet / Cadillac made in the USA.

Now, more and more cars of European brands Audi, BMW, Mercedes - imported from abroad, as well as assembled in factories in the Russian Federation began to appear.

I can take pictures of our local cars if you're interested. :pimpflash

Its always interesting to see people from around the world and compare how they live and their culture compared to where we are and how we live. I have seen a few TV programs about Siberia (Nat. Geog), but mostly about nature ect, no city life.
It can snow here one day and be 70* F the next, if we get any measurable snowfall (6") or more, it usually shuts us down for a few days.
I like the pics!! Good to see your post.

Stas: i doubt you'd get too many of us not liking to see any pictures you have to post of cars, trucks, garages or even of your CLOSED CITY if you are able to post them here on GJ and the internet.

you sound like you maybe don't mind all the RED TAPE or government rules or have you just got used to that being the way it is?

best of luck with the cold and snow, but i bet your spring and summers are pretty nice to maybe make up for the cold weather.

cheers

Very difficult to undertand for me what you mean. I'm not breaking a rule of my city, we are freedom to post photo or video of something to the net.

STAS: thanks for the pictures. i think you understood what i meant. i was just saying that your government has a lot of RULES that i think you are probably used to following so it's very normal way of life.

the CLOSED CITY is something i'm not sure we have here in the USA, but like some members mentioned we do have HOMEOWNER'S ASSOCIATIONS that act like they are the LAW or Government here.

if you can post more pictures please do as you have time to. your city looks very clean and most of those cars seem pretty new. do you drive down the same side of the road as the English or Australians since you have right hand drive cars?

your garages look like they stored tanks and built very well. we have something similar although not built as well called MINI STORAGE.

cheers

Stas: Happy to hear you understood what i meant. since you said CLOSED CITY and you live in SIBERIA some of us old guys over here in the USA think that you are in PRISON which is just not true according to you. i'm thankful for your posts and information cause I never really did or do believe all the junk that comes to us via the news.

your gas is maybe cheaper than ours which was a surprise. those power lines in behind the gas station look similar to some of ours.

cheers

Checkpoint number 1 at the entrance to Zheleznogorsk
Security officer (the name of this department "Atom-Okhrana" - "Atom security" in english ) check pass at the driver and passengers.
90% of employees of security service women since they are more stress-immune in case of conflicts with those who do not have passes to enter.

Welcome to Garage Journal. I always enjoy seeing pictures and how people live in other parts of the world.

In some of the pictures showing streets, there are multiple signs with yellow on the outside and a blue triangle inside with a symbol. Is it a Caution -people crossing street sign?

Thanks

If you talk about that sign, you are right - CROSSWALK SIGN

Oh man, your city looks straight out of a cold war movie - and by the way you describe it, it actually is!

Funny enough, I often read Siberian Times online, just because I find it fascinating that people go about their normal activities in such brutal climate. http://siberiantimes.com/home/

Maybe because I'm from Québec City in Canada, and I feel like we share some similarities. The city 20 kms north of my home is the second snowiest place on Earth after the Kamchatka peninsula...

Welcome to GJ!

Thanks for posting the car and street life pictures.

I noticed you have lots of snow on the streets. Do snow plows remove snow frequently? How is this managed?

In Chicago, Illinois, we voted out a city mayor in 1979, Mr. Michael Bilandic, because the streets were not plowed after a big snow storm. Mayor Bilandic was replaced when Ms. Jane Byrne was elected mayor. She promised to keep the streets plowed.

Since 1980 the city of Chicago has 700+ snow plows and snow removal equipment waiting to remove snow. We also have a central government office named "snow command" that organizes the removal of snow. When snow is expected, we see plows and trucks waiting on the side of the road ready to start plowing when the snow starts to fall. All major roads are cleared immediately and usually within 12 hours every road in the city is clear of snow. We have a mobile phone app that allows people to track city plow trucks and informs us when our street will be plowed.

Detroit is much smaller than Chicago. For many, many years only the primary streets were plowed and even then, not well.

A few years ago, they outsourced plowing the side streets to several contractors, but only after a heavy snow fall. It seems to be working.

My suburb plows all of the side street after a heavy snow fall.

Good question! I think that our roads department waiting summer and road autocleaning itself :bounce::bounce::bounce:

In Krasnoyarsk roads are better cleaned, they use for this much more vehicles for cleaning the city. The main secret of their purity is the huge amount of salt. I do not like salt, because it is mixed with sand, creates puddles, dirt. I like it more in Zheleznogorsk because the snow is WHITE in winter and not dirty like in Krasnoyarsk. Unfortunately we also took practice to use salt on the road. Now the snow has already been rolled, only the GRADER can clean it and they do it, but not as quickly as the residents would like. During the snowfalls this year, I noticed a new tactic of our "Combine of improvement" (Roads department) - on the main roads of the city drove Kamaz Trucks with high-speed dumps. Previously, they always waited until the snow stopped, which caused a lot of problems. But I hope this year snow cleaning will be better than before.

Main secret to safety drive on snow winter road is a good tires, mind and luck! :3gears:

Hello Stas, thank you and your wife for posting a little of your life living deep in Russia!
Care to share a little about Russian Women? Good cook? Good dancer? Sounds like she works too and you are both busy....do you have kids?

Wow...Moscow is pretty far away!
I am wondering where do you go for a holiday or vacation, like the beach...somewhere warm?
Georgia? Armenia?

I was also wondering if you have a sports car that you have fun driving during the summer and park, in the winter?
A lot of us Americans like to have a fun car or boat, Camper...to cruise around in during the summer...some old antiques, some new and sporty.
I have a 4X4 small truck for winter, a Ford Ranger and for summer, a Ford Mustang...is this the same in Russia?
Is there a Russian made convertible sports car?

I am also wondering why is the garages so far away from your homes?
Even Vieux garage is far from where he lives!
Why don't you have a garage right next to your home like we have here in America?
See picture...all the garages are separate and close to our homes, on our property....
https://scontent-atl3-1.**.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/24058734_2034094933283708_8652959391682688055_n.jpg?oh=50bed0b445f1ece8868877b8ec0f0b06&oe=5A9F3FEC

Your garage is far from your home, you have to walk 300+ steps to get to your garage! Why is it built like this?
Do you have enough room on your homes property to build your own garage?
It seems silly that people in a cold climate have to walk a long way to go to there garage.
I imagine, you leave your cars outside by the house and drive to your garage? ... and the garage is used more for car maintenance and less for car storage and overnight parking.
I am just trying to understand why your society designed this building plan.

It is wonderful for a lot of us Americans to be able to talk with a person so far away. We have so many questions! :bounce:

About guns.

Automatic guns have only military/police and criminals.
Hunting rifles you can buy. I think that more about it can tell Vladimir.
I'm not hunter of fisherman ;)

In my car I only have a military sapper shovel just in case:D

Hi!
I see you from Alabama? I like song "Sweethome Alabama" by Bonfire :thumbup::thumbup:
https://music.yandex.ru/album/3326736/track/27830073?play=1&from=serp_autoplay

Big wheels keep on turning
Carry me home to see my kin
Singing songs about the Southland
I miss Alabamy once again
And I think its a sin, yes
Well I heard mister Young sing about her
Well, I heard ole Neil put her down
Well, I hope Neil Young will remember
A Southern man don’t need him around anyhow
Sweet home Alabama
Where the skies are so blue
Sweet Home Alabama
Lord, I’m coming home to you
In Birmingham they love the gov' nor
Now we all did what we could do Now Watergate does not bother me Does your conscience bother you?
Tell the truth
Sweet home Alabama
Where the skies are so blue
Sweet Home Alabama
Lord, I’m coming home to you
Here I come Alabama
Now Muscle Shoals has got the Swampers
And they’ve been known to pick a song or two
Lord they get me off so much
They pick me up when I’m feeling blue
Now how about you?
Sweet home Alabama
Where the skies are so blue
Sweet Home Alabama
Lord, I’m coming home to you
Sweet home Alabama
Oh sweet home baby
Where the skies are so blue
And the guv’nor’s true
Sweet Home Alabama
