What are the slots/opening in a drill press base for?

I don't recall ever seeing a drill press that did not have the slots or openings in a drill press base. My Rigid floor model has two slots that are rectangular shaped with a larger square at one end. (See Bad Quality Picture)

Also, I have never seen anything attached to those openings.

Thanks for looking and thanks in advance for satisfying my curiosity if you have the answer.

Slots are for a large hold down bolt, the "square" at the end is to drop the bolt head thru then slide to required position to hold down a vise, rotary table, special fixture etc.

Tee bolts are placed in the large hole and slid into the slot to hold a vise or part to be drilled. Obviously a part which is too tall to go on the table.
