Re: what did you do in your garage today?

My wife saw the DIY pliers organizer in my tool box. She drug me out to the travel trailer and pointed at the cooking tool drawer and told me to make her one too.

Took about 15 minutes. Most of that was emptying and refilling the drawer.

Wire shelf thingy $1.00
Pliers to bend it around $0.00
Happy wife - priceless.

Yesterday:

1) Installed new battery in motorcycle, started it up, actually rode the thing a little bit! The last time it ran was the day I bought it. Although at the end of the ride it started becoming unhappy, feels like it's super rich.

2) Cleaned up a little bit after the new garage entry door I bought fell over onto a bunch of stuff. Oops.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

The solenoid valves for the slide showed up last night. It took me about an hour to swap them out, tried it and everything is kosher again.

I then helped my son try to diagnose the vibration he is having in his Jeep. We removed the front driveshaft to eliminate or pinpoint the front end as the culprit and then took some measurements of the rear pinion and driveshaft angles.

We were going to test drive it but a big rain cloud moved in and he had just detailed his Jeep so we decided to do the road test this morning.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Pulled out one of my vises that has be in electrolysis the whole week.
IMG_20120727_215343.jpg

Used a brass brush and simple green to scrub and left over crud from surface, and to scrub off any areas that started to turn black.

While putting the next piece, the vise had totally rusted. :lol_hitti
IMG_20120727_235122.jpg

Smoothed out the casting with a sand paper flap wheel, wire cup, air file, a 3M abrasive wheel, and a manual file.

IMG_20120728_030255.jpg

Threw some self etching primer on it since I don't know when I'll get to it next and i don't want it to rust.

Will probably fill in the big gashes with jbweld and re-sand. Need to figure out how to remove the jaws.

The dynamic jaw was already putting off lots of bubbles.

Nothing major. I cut these for my pantry. Makes the shelves more useful:

I also sanded and clear coated this for my outside patio:

Table01.jpg

After 6 months outside, an inside finish was on it.

Table02.jpg

Belt sanded, then orbital sanded. (HF Stuff that really works)

Back where it was, looking much nicer! Hopefully it will last a year, or until I build the stone base with Granit top.

Built some shelves in the garage. 8ft run by 6ft tall and 30in deep. Loaded the shelves with stuff and cleaned out the garage.

Prepped and primed the new base for the Ridgid vise I got my dad. Will take a picture tomorrow after I get it painted... Haven't decided on the color yet... Probably go with the classic black. ;)

No kidding.. where is "Up here"... It was freaking 95F+ here today... You must live in the Arctic Circle or something....

still moving stuff around but had to start the wood stove, getting chilly up here

Wow! Ok, where's "up here" that you need a fire - the air conditioning is on here....:dunno:

Why do people not take a few moments to put their location in their personal information? It takes only a minute to do so and it makes posts like this make so much more sense.:dunno:

Had to replace the exhaust gasket on the VW. The graphite gaskets did not hold up at all. This time going copper.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Had a customer bring me a Banshee motor two weeks ago that was trashed. I built the entire quad for him about six years ago complete with new motor, paint and chrome as well as some chassis mods. He had his grandkids help him clean it last fall after the last dune trip of the season. Evidently they filled up the pipes with water while helping him wash it and he didn't get all of the water out of it.

He got it out of storage a few weeks ago to get ready for a trip to the dunes and could not get it started. When he brought it to me the engine was seized and I could not even turn it over. Upon disassembly I found the entire bottom end on the PTO (right) cylinder rusted and full of corrosion. I ended up having to order a new crankshaft as well as have the cylinders bored with new pistons.

This is what the crankshaft looked like when I broke the motor down and removed it from the crankcase.
35iyc0o.jpg

The new crankshaft showed up Friday so I trued and welded it prior to starting reassembly of the bottom end. There was a lot of cleaning and scouring of the bottom half of the crankcase to get rid of all of the rust/corrosion.

New crankshaft.

Here is one of the crankshaft pins welded after trueing it on the jig.

Here are the crankcase halves cleaned with the transmission cleaned and installed. Ready to install the crankshaft in place.

Case halves torqued together.

Finishing up the clutch assembly along with the side gears.
icpnqw.jpg

Cylinders and head cleaned and ready for installation.
2wd63pe.jpg

Clutch cover/water pump installed and cylinders installed awaiting the head.
es2q7p.jpg

Installing and setting up the PVL ignition system to specifications.
2iudpnm.jpg

Completed and waiting for the customer to pick it up and install it in the chassis.
dfiuxc.jpg

All in all a pretty straightforward job but like I told the owner, this could have been avoided by making sure to get all of the water out of the engine before putting it away for the winter. This is another reason why I mention to my clients to put caps on the exhaust prior to washing their quads. Water can get into the pipes accidentally but where there is a hole kids will definately get creative on ways to fill them.

Changed the front and rear pads on my SUV. Had to replace the front passenger rotor do to a pad failure, which was the reason for a total pad change to begin with. Also had to replace the brake line when it snapped in my hand while trying to move it an 1/8" for clearance.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Ran another power drop from the garage door opener outlet through the attic and down the back side of the work shop part of the garage. My work bench has a power strip on the back of it that I had to use an extension cord from the ONLY outlet in the garage to use it. This new outlet is right there so now I went from one outlet to 6 right where I need em.

Also did an emergency fix on my son's powerwheels truck. One of the power leads on the electric motor broke off, so I was able to solder a wire to what was left to reconnect it.

Installed Fastway Pegs, Kaoko throttle lock and a TT GPS mount on a 2012 R1200GS Adventure for my next video. Damn mosquitoes are killing me though!

I fabricated a rack to hang my saddlebags on when they are not on my Wide Glide. I also posted the build under the welding projects thread.

I cleaned up/painted my Rigid vac. No "Before" photo but it had paint spatter & drywall compound all over it.

The orange parts had faded into a lousy dark gold. I used a cheapo generic flat black and Rustoleum plastic paint on the orange. In hindsight I wish I'd painted it red as it doesn't match the original Rigid orange but at least it's neat and all one color.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Also started on a resto of old air horns my Dad had on each truck he owned when I was a kid. They've been in a box since 1990! They're nothing to look at, a bit bent (as you can see) but they're ridiculously loud. He'd announce arriving home with a short double toot each afternoon.
I'm going to scare my sister to death by surprising her with the same double toot the next time I visit her; she'll think it's Dad back from the grave.

They use an old hospital oxygen tank (oblong, about a foot long) and a manual spring loaded brass valve to actuate. He'd fill the tank at the gas station. I MAY leave it like that as a reminder, or I may update to an onboard compressor and electronic air valve (anyone know a good source for those?). Enough blah, blah. It's Rustoleum Hammertone gray:

At one time I was looking at OBA for my jeep. I decided that I really didn't need it. I went back to the jeep site and found a couple of references (http://www.earlycj5.net/forums/showthread.php?51753-on-board-air&highlight=board+air) that sent me to this one http://www.kilbyenterprises.com/faq.htm. I hope it helps...

Oh, thank you for the links. I'll pour over them to see what I can use out of them.

Right now I'm thinking of a temporary install using the parts I (my Dad) already had. But I'll likely go to at least an electricaly actuated valve eventually instead of a spring loaded manual valve and cable arrangement

Go do a search on the CJ5 site. I seem to remember a couple of guys that built their OBA systems entirely from scratch and posted the build. I can't seem to find the link. The articles may have been dropped for some reason.

BTW: When I was hanging around there a lot those guys were real nice to me. They answered questions and gave me ideas on fixing my jeep.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Replaced the rear wheel cylinders on my '97 Ford Taurus in the driveway not the garage. It was about 98 today but really low humidity. Fortunately I have the right side of the car in the shade until about 12:30 and I was able to finish that side and move to the left side of the car which will be in the shade from about 1:30 on. The LH cylinder was leaking badly and soaked the recently replaced brake lining so that had to go also. Just for fun I asked the guy at Autozone if the would replace the brake linings under warranty and he said they would. Does any one know what size the rear axle nut on a '97 Taurus is? I was able to get it off with a 36mm but it was kinda loose.

Accuweather said it was 111F here and the garage doesn't have AC so instead of working in the garage I made venison snack sticks in the kitchen (in the AC). I'll put them in the smoker tomorrow.

Kind of a busy day for me, I removed the IRS suspension from a XJ-6 Jaguar and stripped it down to replace the bearings in the diff, put new batteries in my old Simpson 270 and rebuilt a Chevy alternator. Not a bad day for an old guy.

The only GJ-worthy (barely) thing I did this weekend was reassemble by old Rigid shop vac that I previously posted about. The orange is too yellow compared to the original, but I don't care. It'll get scarred up soon enough and at least looks better than the paint spattered and faded mess it was.

Now the body and casters look worse! Oh well.

Got tired of having to dig around three or four locations to find the screwdriver I needed so I went and bought the $20 craftsman 17-piece special, and made a little rack with a hole for each screwdriver and mounted it above the work bench, right where I need it!

Put some lipstick on a pig. Well, the upper lip anyways.

Wire brushed my ATV trailer, then painted it with rattle cans. Ran out of paint before I got to the underside so I'll pick up some more when I go to get a repair kit for the coupler. It tightens up nicely, but springs are loose I sometimes have to get my finger up in there to pop the clamp down when attaching to my truck.

I had some questions for the trailer build guys which I will post elsewhere.

Also started to build a shelf under a workbench, then found some MDF to repurpose for the surface, so I'll make adjustments and finish it off today.

Then, a big clean up.... wait for the dust to settle so I can refinish a lamp I made for Mrs. Outlander. Nice rainy day today, so inside jobs are in order.

17 pieces and only 16 screwdrivers? Lost one already, huh? At least I'm not alone! :lol_hitti
