I put my generator on the battery tender & I also started the generator.

Funny, people up north are just starting to pull out the generators, while people down in the south are putting them away... No hurricanes this year!

Re: What did you do in your garage today?

Hung my new banner that my son got me last night.

Then I unloaded these two new catalytic converter/headpipes that need to go on a 2005 F150. I ordered them in from my local NAPA store. They turned out to have excellent fitment.

Luckily I had soaked the headpipe fasteners on the manifolds last week when I diagnosed the truck. Last night I threw it on the lift and gave them another shot of Kroil so it could soak for a few minutes while I was getting tools out.
144ckqw.jpg

Once the fasteners were all removed I put a pole jack under the transfer case to hold it while I removed three of the four bolts retaining the crossmember in place as well as removed the bolts holding the TC mount to the crossmember. I then simply allowed the crossmember to pivot down out of the way to remove the headpipes as one assembly easing disassembly.

Old catalytic converters/headpipes removed. These ones had 140k miles on them.

New catalytic converters/headpipes loosely assembled and ready for installation.

Bolted in place and buttoning things up. I also replaced all four oxygen sensors which were original and hadn't been replaced.

All in all not a bad job. Took me approx. 3 hours start to finish. Hooked up the scanner and test drove it to ensure the readings and everything looked good. The key I think was to get the fasteners soaking with penetrant otherwise this job could have very easily gone south on me. This is the main reason I hate doing exhaust work but this guy is a pretty good customer.

Last night I "fixed" my MIL's back window that would not stay up.

Tonight I need to change her oil. Its a pretty cool day here in Indiana, gonna test out the shop heater tonight!

Its a Ford Focus, might be a real good excuse to buy the floor jack and jack stands I been looking at...

Didn't really do anything in the shop today, but was traipsing around the woods at my old home place today and spied this:

<a href="http://photobucket.com/" target="_blank"><img src="http://i265.photobucket.com/albums/ii220/BIGIRON_01/a554ae61-360b-420b-bf56-f304a3159635_zps75269d6d.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo a554ae61-360b-420b-bf56-f304a3159635_zps75269d6d.jpg"/></a>

Might have been the first push mower my Dad ever had. If that is the same one, I logged many hours behind that thing.

dla
Looks like a Monkey Wards. I had a similar one that was my first power mower, given to me by my father and it was his first as well. I wasn't even old enough to be trusted with it when he got it. 2.75hp and it lasted well over 40 years. When I gave it away the guy that took it asked if it worked and I fired it up for him.:rocker: I had replaced it with my dad's next mower, a Wards 3.5 with a rear bag, as he went with a self-propelled due to his advancing age. I used the 3.5 for many years until I bought a MTD 5hp rear-bagger. Still have it. I'm 57 and I've had exactly 3 push mowers. Those old Wards units were great.

My father is 66 and has had the same Honda mower for probably the last ~30 years... lol. He's changed the transmission on it, swapped the engine, new wheels, new cables... Takes a lickin and keeps on tickin...

Sounds like the old hammer story.

"This hammer is over 100 years old and still going strong. I have replaced the handle 6 times and the head three times."

They just don't make quality like this any more.

LMAO... Yeah while he was on vacation I told him I was going to buy him a new mower and trash his old one. Oooohhh that did NOT go over well. In all honesty though, I would say most of the work I mentioned happened within the last 3 or 4 years... So ~25 years with maybe only new bags & blades isn't too bad.

Stole someone's idea on here and made a couple of zip tie holders out of some PVC pipe.

Also put edge banding on one of the pedestals I made last weekend.

I think my Dad might have started with the 100 year old hammer...... He bought a trunk full of mower bodies, handles and one good engine from our local Western Auto store in Clarksville Va. He had only ever had a reel mower and felt secure enough to put out 5 bucks (a lot of money for him at the time) for the parts and pieces. He used the other parts for years to keep the thing going.

I learned to trim close with that mower, since if I didn't I had to use hand shears to finish the job. We moved to NC in 1971 and the mower came with us. He sold the thing to a guy at work for 5.00, so he got his money back after about 10 years use.

Thanks for the help with the I.D. I'd kinda like to know what it is just for giggles.

Re: What did you do in your garage today?

Started this about a week ago. Started with a free table on casters......

Then needed a place to store it out of the way. I cut and welded 3 frames to make this. You can see the remnants of the last frame behind the saw in the background.....

Then put a coat of paint on it. I was pretty disappointed that the **** at NAPA sold me flat instead of gloss. Not a real big deal, I just didn't want to drive back to town to get gloss......

Then started to refinish some 2" solid maple tops. I think they're maple. Lots of holes to plug.......

Which got to me here. All the holes plugged and everything sanded. I will router a radius on a few edges tonight.

Then put a few coats of this on.......

The final size will be 11' x 3' with enough room to park the table and a rubbermaid cart under it. The best part is the table, the steel frames and the maple tops were free. I'll have about $100 in it when I'm done. :rocker:

Re: What did you do in your garage today?

Got the scissor lift back together yesterday. Wish I took a picture with the batteries out. I sprayed the battery box & charger area with the Rustoleum leak seal rubber coating. I figured maybe it would work better than paint at preventing corrosion & rust... only time will tell. All the components under that plastic shield I had to sit with a brass brush and clean off tons of surface rust & mud... But now it's all clean and pretty and works great. Hopefully won't have to mess with anything for several more years. Probably the next thing to go is some hydraulic lines controlling the wheels underneath, they are starting to show their age and last year I had to change the hose going to the lift cylinder as it was shooting oil out in every which direction one day... lol.

Re: What did you do in your garage today?

Last night I got the Duramax washed, chamoised and pulled into the shop. I am going to start tonight to do some upgrades and mods that have been sitting on the bench for about three months now because I haven't had time to work on my own truck.

I am going to install the upgraded upper intermediate steering shaft and lower steering column bearing, install a larger transmission cooler and remove the OEM transmission lines before they start to leak and replace them with high pressure hoses and install a Transgo Jr. shift kit in the Allison. I then need to rotate tires and do a LOF service on it. Then I can park it back outside so it can have snow set on it all winter long. I hate driving the truck in the winter because of our Utah roads so it usually just sits parked in the back yard or in the shop when it doesn't have someone elses vehicle(s) in there, which isn't very often but I am working on changing that. I am seriously thinking about slowing down and enjoying on taking care of our own fleet for a while.

It's the wife's, but she lets me drive it every now and then. Gotta love a blue Mustang! :rocker:

She'd have one like yours, but it took me 15 years to convince her this was what she needed.

I just noticed that your overhead heater looks like a Hot Dawg, is that correct? How do you like it and what size is your shop?

I ask because I just installed one about three/four weeks ago as my old Reznor was getting old. I just haven't run the heater yet as our temperatures in Utah have been fantastic this fall. I am not complaining at all though.:rocker:

It is the Modine Hawt Dog. I put it in 15 years ago and run it off natural gas. My garage is a little over 800' with 9' ceilings. A 45K BTU unit would have done the job. I elected for the 75K unit so I can heat things up quickly when it's time to work, or so that it comes back up to temp quickly after opening the doors when it's -***. I keep it at 45* just to keep things from freezing and it only takes 10 minutes to come up to 70*. Not ideal since this will cycle more than the smaller unit, but in 15 years I've had only 2 problems with it. I had to put a controller in it a couple of years ago, and just last week it needed the power vent motor replaced. I might not have had these problems with the smaller unit. I'd buy another one.

Thanks for the info. The one I just installed was a 75k btu NG one as well. My shop is just a little larger (1150 sq/ft.) but my thinking was the same, when it is in the single digits outside and I open the door I want it to recover quickly. I usually set the temperature @ 50 degrees when I am not in the shop and then kick it up to about 65 degrees when working. My old Reznor was about ten years old when I bought it and installed it in my shop and that was eighteen years ago. I had to put a gas valve in it three years ago and a new blower fan two years ago. Last year when checking it over for the winter season I noticed that there was some rust starting in the combustion chamber area so I thought I had better replace it this year.

Glad to hear you have been happy with the Hot Dawg, I did some research and had heard good things about them before purchasing mine.

Thanks.

Mike.

Okay, you guys all officially ****. I'm sitting in a "vacation condo" in the desert without a garage or a tool. I'm going crazy watching the landscape guy screwing up a perfectly good lawn edger. Your daily posts make me so jealous and homesick for my little shop. I really love GJ. does that make me a sadist, or ??, or both???

75k BTU LP Mr Heater ceiling mount that looks like the Hot Dawg one here. Works great in my ~750 square foot free span garage. Link in my signature for how my install went.
