After doing a couple final passes in the yard with the mower to mulch the remaining leaves, I completed the seasonal change over from mower to blower. This included some unplanned pressure washing thanks to some a**hole neighbors that are too lazy to pick up after their dogs.

All set for the inevitable white stuff that is right around the corner.

Got the capitals on the pillars late yesterday. My friend and I had a helluva time on the last one, we ran out of gas on the last lift and almost dropped that heavy mofo. Had to perch it on a ladder and try again.
Later today I'll do some CAD (cardboard aided design) beam mockups to figure out the right overhang from the pillars
Today was intended to be beam procurement and making the new larger ogive jig, but the Suburban is suddenly electrically dead. Batteries are fine, problem is most likely a bad ground cable on the primary battery or the ignition switch has finally given up.

Got the 84 Suzuki SJ410 engine back together and drove it out, then went and picked up a 16’ fibreglass canoe that needs about ten holes/cracks cut out so I can put new fibreglass on.

I fabricated two support brackets for the top of the stairway to the mezzanine and installed them. It was Beer:30 by the time I finished, so I stopped working for the day.

I picked up my US General rolling tool cabinets and then I spent a few hours leveling them up. My garage floor has quite a slope from the back to the front. I don't know why they build it like that. My clothes dryer packed in and I had a ratty old spare in the barn. I brought it into the garage and washed it down before moving it into the house the next day.

Added a deck to the cart that my smaller compressor calls home. The compressor used to fall between the rails if it was not well centered, now there is a 16 X 17 inch flat deck for that little boy to ride on.

All the material was already on hand; just waiting to be used.

Last June NUTTSGT posted about some folding table legs being clearanced at Rural King, I bought 4 sets for about $3 per set. After suffering sticker shock for 1/2" plywood I put off building some small portable work tables for a while. Fast forward to last week when I got tired of moving an old warped sheet of oak faced 3/4" plywood around my basement I decided to use it for some tables. I came up with a cut plan that would give me four 2'x3' tables plus doublers to counteract the warped plywood. I thought that 3/4" ply would be too heavy but it turned out OK, actually pretty sturdy. I made one just to try it out and after a week of use I am happy with it, 3 more to go.

One of our chickens was laying around and acting strange, so I threw up the temporary dog crate and set it up to put the chicken in it.

By theis evening we can tell the chicken is at least moving around a little and it's innards are working. Will wait a few days to make sure it's moving around well and eating/drinking before putting it back with the other birds.

Been getting to freezing here at night so decided it was time to move the pressure washer from the shed to the semi-heated detached garage. As I was surveying what I needed to move to make a place for it a thought hit me. I put a new pump on it 2 years ago - there's no shroud - the old one would no longer fit - nothing but a naked pump hung on by four bolts. So I went out to the shed, spent 5 minutes pulling the pump, and put it on a shelf in the garage.
Problem solved - space saved.
Why not just winterize the pump?
I have a short section of garden hose that attaches to the PW, and a funnel on the other end.
Run about a half gallon of RV antifreeze through it, then blow it out, good to go!

I started out trying to finish this pass on the yard, leaves and locust pods. Got most of it done yesterday before the wind picked up, and was blowing in more leaves from across the street than I was removing.

Got about half done when the handle snapped on my yard vac. It takes a lot of abuse, right at the non mandrel bent corner. A couple years ago, the bend collapsed. I bent it back and reinforced the corner with a gusset. That worked, sort of. The gusset held, and the tubing cracked right where the gusset ended.

So, instead of yard cleaning, I spent part of the afternoon and evening cutting out the gusset, welding the tube where it cracked, and cutting new, larger gussets.

The welds aren’t pretty, but they’ll hold. If this breaks again, I’ll either have to get a new handle, or reinforce it with plates along the outside. Or something.

The yard vac is ready to go back to work.

Did some "CAD" (cardboard aided design) work tonight, some beam mockups for the pergola project, so we can experiment with different overhang lengths. Did some in photoshop first, and we think 24" is too far and 18" is too short. So looking for the 'Goldilocks' length. Coincidentally, the overall span on the capitals is 11'6". So if I use a pair of 4x10x8' beams with a 1'L half-lap joint, the overhangs would come out to 21". A happy coincidence.

Gonna try to go to a proper lumber yard and find some 4x10 beams. The big box stores don't stock them and I want them next week if I can. I should have the larger right- and left-handed ogive jigs built by then.

Later this winter I'm adding a large 'L'-shaped grill counter, stainless propane grill on the short leg facing the house / back door, with a domed pizza oven on the far left end (similar to the doghouse igloo in the pic) and a classic Weber charcoal embedded in the counter between the other two.
Couple years ago I built a grill counter with a similar dual-grill arrangement. Only got to use it for about 9mos before we sold that house.
Got a lot of construction / remodeling and furniture building projects stacked up all the way into next summer.

Well - then I have to deal with antifreeze. Last year I just used air to blow it out while I pulled the engine through. That worked well enough but with the position of the pump it's literally quicker for me just to pull it.

Now that's just plain off the chart Ray!
Thx very much. It's been a lot of hard work, including casting all the concrete pieces in August in Vegas. Not my smartest plan. First sketch was in March, molds and dyes and mixer procured in June / July, casting started Aug 1. A couple weeks ago was cutting 14" square holes in the slab and excavating large footings to support both the columns and slabs. Over 400# of concrete in each footing. And the pillars are something over 600# each.
Last night I whipped up the cardboard beam ends mockups as a last check on dimensions and overhangs, made those decisions and this afternoon I picked up the (4) 4"x10"x8' beams and related materials. But work on the beams waits until after Thanksgiving. But should only take about a week once I get started. Need the time off anyway, my shoulders and left wrist are killing me. Those capitals weigh 120-130# apiece.
Had to go find the 'how to' vid on ogives / trammels that I used for the grill project a couple years ago -

So, Good Times.

The cinderblock planters pre-date our purchase of the house. Going to be casting some 'stacked stone' veneers for those walls and the grill counter to come, as well as some cap / coping stones for the top of those walls which will also comfortable to sit on. Similar in color to the pillars.

The Garage Door Opener on my workshop failed late Yesterday afternoon, so I called my buddy who was willing to climb the ladder to trouble shoot the problem. We found the threads on the trolley that is driven by the shaft drive were stripped. I ordered a replacement yesterday evening and it is to be delivered tomorrow.
I indulged myself in watching Utube videos about various things that I found interesting.

Hung up some pegboard (finally) that has been kicking around for a few months. Plan is to start printing some various holders, primarily for consumables, bits, etc that go with the power tools above. Also took the chance to space out the tools a bit to make sure I have room for a few additions over Xmas. The sanding discs will move down to the pegboard once I get around to printing an organizer for them, as will future belts for the new belt sander.

Going to pick up another drill and impact over black Friday (almost 50% off) and hoping for a new circ saw for xmas🤞

This essentially clears out all of the power tools from the toolbox.

Helped a friend replace rear shocks, sway bar bushings and links on his Focus wagon. A three hour job that ended up taking five hours - the bottom shock bolt on one side just would not come free. I hammered on it with my big IR cordless impact, rounded off the bolt head and started to round the socket as well. Heated the nut, used a turbo socket, nothing. Finally, used a sawzall to cut through the bolt. The nut was captive, so I had to use a dremel with a cutoff wheel to cut the tack welds holding it. Replaced it with hardware store nut and bolt.

That is a great look. I love our patio and outdoor cook area. Your beam design "CAD", is awesome.

Finished modifying the speaker mounts. Then took them inside to install them.

For modifying them, I cut off about 4 inches from the main shaft. I then removed the big bracket for the speaker and drilled a hole in the mount to use a bolt to connect it to the existing mount on the speaker.

I started a fire in the woodburner trying to get some heat in the garage. I'm back at the station for a 16 hour spot before my shift tomorrow. . . makes getting anything done the shop hard.

I tackled the holes in the exterior wall where the AC come in. They were just fed through standard dryer vent doodads & this lead to mice coming to visit behind the closet drywall. Drywall is off owing to plumbing repairs & the bathroom next to the closet being torn out.
So I ordered some rather spiffy looking stainless steel 4.5mm mesh.
Then I needed to get to my sheet metal toolbox which was buried behind another toolbox & a cart.
Set to work & cut myself to ******* ribbons on the mesh. fiddly job so couldn't use gloves & paid the price. Every time I moved it, cut it or even just picked it up I got stabbed & started leaking from another hole.

First layer of mesh is installed. rethinking if it needs a second layer...

So all I actually did IN the garage was move tool boxes & carts around. Luckily roomie is away in Tucson so they can stay in the middle of the floor for now...

Not much of anything at work today. Did have a customer come in for a top off of air. Well the service advisor leaves after we guide her in the shop then she goes on a rant about how I just put air in her tires instead of nitrogen and how nitrogen was liquid so air can’t be on top of liquid. I tried explaining that this is a different nitrogen and she insists no it’s liquid and now she will have to go have them professionally drained and refilled 🤣. I don’t know if a shop in the past told her that or what but I was trying to hold my laugh in. She stood outside the whole time too because we wouldn’t put on any type of face covering. That’s why I do not like customers having to drive in the shop unless it’s a drop off when we get too. I don’t mind if they have a question or if they have a question that they ask the service advisor then they refer them to us I don’t mind that what I mind is customers standing there over me while I do my job and we aren’t allowed to say anything due to customers calling the nice ladies who make appointments and getting angry with them in the past or showing up and trying to come in the shop again because they were upset. I’ll be glad when this stuff is over and we can drive it in again.
