I tried a powerline adapter but it wouldn't connect. We have a Centurylink router in the house. I get a very weak wifi signal in the detached garage. It works well enough to run my phone and amazon echo out there. I'm looking to put in a security camera system. The one's I've been looking at all require a hard line connection to the home network. I've looked at various wifi extenders, network extenders, etc. The more I look the more I'm confused about what I need.

Is it possible to put something like this out there and plug the DVR/NVR into it and it will be connected to the network? I know a lot of you guys on here push the ubiquity stuff so if they make something similar that's fine too.

I'm not a very tech savvy person

There are few very good posts in the electrical section about wifi to the garage... you might want to take a look at that.

I'd try putting the powerline adapter on the other leg of the 220V. This is assuming you've got 220V run from your house to the detached. Is that something easy you can try?

Try moving the router to a wall that faces the garage so you get a better wifi signal. Had to do that to my last house where the garage was 75 feet away.

I would buy a Ubiquiti UAP-AC-LITE run a cable from it to your router. It requires a little bit of setup.

I can’t run an Ethernet cable from the house to the garage. It’s all pavement between there. I’m asking if there’s something I can plug an Ethernet cable from the security system into a wireless access point. And that wireless access point would allow me to view the cameras on the phone app. The extended WiFi coverage in the garage would be a bonus. Sorry I don’t think I made that very clear in my first post.

If you have line of sight from one side of the house to a side of the garage I would set up a wireless bridge using a pair of Ubiquiti Nanostation AC units along with a wireless access point in the garage. this will give you more than enough bandwidth to support security cameras and any other wireless devices.

I was using a "Wi-Fi extender" to help out with weak wi-fi signal to the garage. It was working well for my application of roughly 75' through walls to detached garage. However, I just unplugged it due to a ip address/software conflict I need to deal with... I may try to pull cat 5 cable out there eventually but the extender DID work well for my needs. Might be worth a try.

Probably your powerline adapter wouldn't connect because the outlet (circuit) you plugged it into was on a different leg of your panel. Don't forget that you get 240v in your house because you have two 120v legs.

So you have electricity to your garage - is there anything else on that circuit in your house (an outlet somewhere) that you could plug you powerline adapter in to? And could you reasonable run a cable from your modem to the adapter?

Before you spend any more money, I would try to get that working. They actually work pretty decently most of the time

I can try different outlets but it goes through the panel on the house and the panel in the garage. I think that’s why it’s not connecting. They worked inside the house.

You could run a wireless mesh system to extend your wireless while still using the same SSID. i have a netgear orbi and love it. They also make a outdoor satellite that may work for you to reach your garage. The beauty of this system is unlike a extender you use the same SSID and your devices will connect automatically as you move to another satellite. The linking between satellites is transparent to the user and there is no need to configure IP to the satellites.

If you already have the powerline adapter try it again and make sure neither of the 2 plugs you connect them to are GFCI protected, as trying to pass the signal through a GFCI outlet or breaker will cause a weak or no signal. To be sure press the test buttons on all of your GFCI outlets and breakers, that way if a normal outlet is wired downstream of a GFCI that outlet will be off too. Don't reset the GFCI's until after you have found working outlets in both the house and garage.

I use a Netgear Nighthawk X6 R8000 and a Netgear extender that is about 90 ft apart in detached shop. The extender has a router function and is connected to 24 port switch. I have been very satisfied with it.
Have a smart TV, google home and multiple computers that are very functional connected wireless and hardwire.
I can stream Youtube and such in the garage.
Comes in very handy for researching or reading GJ

THIS^^^^^

You'll love it and feel like every other router you've owned is junk. I have one in my shop, and I set up our fire station with two of them. Give them both the same ID and password, and you can go from one to the other with your devices seamlessly.
