I have been looking for a restoration project to kill a little time. The other day working on cleaning up someones shop I was given a this. Obviously its some form of clutch/gear reducer but I don't know exactly what it is or if I can find any use for it. At any rate cleaning it up will give me a little practice until I can find a good deal on something I need.

Thanks.

That was what it was suggested as when it was given to me. It would make since that it would be an integral part of a larger machine as it has no markings on it.

Lathe counter shaft assembly seems to fit the bill. Now I just have to decide if its applicable to multiple machines or specific to one.

You are correct that it is a lathe counter shaft/clutch assembly. It is for a specific lathe and judging by the balance holes in the big pulley it was for a higher end machine. It can be adapted to other brands.

"balance holes" answered my question. Thanks.

it goes on an atlas 12 lathe or the craftman copy
I have looked at a few pics, from what I all of the atlas and craftsman lathes I have found have two supports mounted at either end of the axle. This one has single brace in the center of the axle. The guy I got this from has two larger atlas lathes both I believe are complete. I will check them next time I am there to see what kind of countershaft set up they have.

Nope, I just happened over an atlas 12 with the same countershaft. Thanks for the help.
