What do you think of this Compressor?

I am in the market for a larger compressor. Right now I have a 20 gal Charge Air Pro (oil less) that puts out 8.3cfm @ 40 and 5.8 @90. This compressor is barely adaquate but gets the job done.

I would like to buy this as the last compressor I need to buy. I know 2 stage is where it's at, but I am a hobbist and try to be realistic. I paint alittle and do some bodywork and just bought a small sand blaster (requires 12 cfm @ 90 per sales litature).

I like this Quincy and know Quincy is the name in compressors, but have not heard alot about this Air Master Series. Anyone have any expierence with it?

At 3.5 hp, I think you'll be a little disappointed. If your budget allows I'd look for a 5 hp unit.

$200 more will get you an Eagle with +6 cfm at 100 psi, over the 3.5 HP listed.
- D/A sanders and sandblasters are pigs on air volume

5 HP 1-stage would me minimum ...that is why I have a 2 stage 5 HP.
(you may be disappointed, in a 3.5 HP... spend a little more)

I am in almost the exact same situation. I have a 25 gal Craftsman oil less little compressor that won't keep up with any type of hog. I would love to try painting or using a cut off wheel without having to wait every other minute to let it catch up.

I was pretty sold on getting the Ingersoll Rand 80 Gallon, 2-Stage 5 HP 175 psi ($999) from Tractor Supply Co, but have recently read a lot of negative info about their choice in motors now.

I also started looking into the US General 60 Gallon, 2 Stage 5 HP 165 psi from Harbor Freight. This compressor, from what I remember reading is completely made in America. That is one thing I am trying to get myself into caring about more lately.

I am going to have to run a 230 V line, and also air lines. So I have more costs to incur, but was trying to keep my air compressor priced under $1000. Seems totally do able now that I think I have it narrowed down to just a couple.

If anyone else would have any ideas or suggestions on what to look at, I am still looking too. Hopefully I helped a little. Good Luck!

I also started looking into the US General 60 Gallon, 2 Stage 5 HP 165 psi from Harbor Freight. This compressor, from what I remember reading is completely made in America. That is one thing I am trying to get myself into caring about more lately.

That U.S. General compressor uses the same Chinese made pump as many other compressors making bogus "made in america" claims such as Eaton and others. "Assembled in America from imported parts" would be more accurate. Those compressor pumps are junk.

Save your money and buy a Quincy or a Curtis. Also look around for decent used ones.

As to the Ingersoll Rand compressors, they have indeed been plagued with motor failures. A good friend of mine has the upright 5HP/60 gallon and uses it rarely, just occasional weekend wrenching, and it died at 2 years of age. IR did replace the motor for him, but he had to really push the issue relentlessly with them before they finally took care of him.

I checked out the Harbor Freight 60 gal 5 hp one late yesterday, and saw on the motor it was made in Mexico. But the pump or the tank didn't have any Made tags on it.

I'm in the market for an Air Compressor as well. Any heads up will be greatly appreciated. I myself have considered the IR, but seen so much motor failures, not what to think about it.

When I went to HF and looked at the US General for $899, there were a couple of things that I just wasnt comfortable with. On the Motors duty rating - it was blank....tells me they are hiding something.
In the back of my mind, I just had a feeling that the few hundred dollars I was saving was going to cost me dearly in the future.
I wound up with an Ingersoll-Rand 80 gal 2 stage from (of all places) Tractor supply company.
$999 loaded on your truck...I believe the IR is still a quality brand, it is a 2 stage and it is a true 5hp (22-28 amp draw). After all my research, this was by far the best deal.
Hope I made the right choice and I feel that I did. I doubt I will ever have to wait on this compressor to refill.

I got a Porter Cable about 6 years ago thats a 5-6 hp 2 stage 60 gallon upright for around $550. yes its remanufactured but works great. go out to tool supply stores and see what they have. always go a little bigger than what you think your going to need.

I have this compressor now. It's kinda the middle of the road. Not a 2 stage but over 100 PSI. My DA sander and 90 degree angle grinder works fine with this compressor. It cycles off and on while I am using it so I know it can keep up.

I'd seriously step up to a 2 stage 5hp 60 gallon, if you really want it to be the last compressor you'll have to buy. It's well worth it in the end. JMO

I don't think 2 stage means higher volume, just higher pressure. That does give you a head start with the amount of ballast when you begin blasting or using a continuous air tool. But, the recovery time will be what it is.

Nothing beats big bore, just like at the drags. Big bore comes with big electric motors. Buy what you can handle circuit wise. 5HP today is what 3.5 was 30 years ago. They changed the way they calculate.

Go big for lots of air.

For a homeowner/weekend warrior, I don't think you can go wrong with Campbell Hausfeld...made in USA, at least a few years ago. I got a 2 stage 80gal Husky (rebaged CH) a few years ago. It was on sale, plus I opened a Home Depot credit card which got me an additional 20% off and 1 year no interest. It lists for $1200, I think I paid $845ish if my memory serves me right.

Quincy, Gardner-Denver, Bel Aire, Saylor-Beall, and Jenny(formerly Emglo) are all QUALITY Made in USA compressors. Price is equivalent.

I've seen Puma compressors at a local farm supply store and was impressed with the specs. I believe they're made overseas, but then again, I thought I saw a "Made in USA" sticker or "USA" sticker, so maybe it's only assembled in USA. I don't know. But for the specs, the price seemed very right.

It has a Dayton motor from 1963 and have no idea on pump it only has Model A-9 on it so cant date it. So since the dayton old pump was SO MUCH QUIETER I deciced to mount that to my 30 gal and its been working great. My way of thinking lately is that I dont have space for a 60 or 80 gal so I like the idea of a 20 30 gal max with a pump of the 80 for quick recovery.

interesting you say that. i have a quincy 325 i have been meaning to rebuild. i have been kicking around mounting it to a 30 gallon tank i have. anyone see a real issue with this?
