What Does Your Upper Storage Look Like?

Hey all, I am just looking for some ideas on upper storage shelving or the like for my garage. I did not find a thread dedicated to this topic so thought I would initiate one.

I currently have 10 feet of the cheapo white wire stuff spanning across my mancave and, although serving it's purpose, is ghastly to look at.

I am looking for something a bit beefier but also cool looking.

Let's see what you have :)

Yep. Soffit storage is the way to do it. Otherwise, that's all wasted space.

I agree with Jack and also like the fact that there are doors on the storage areas. I have mine open as I have not got around to closing them up......can't believe how much dust is up there!!

I just put up a wall's length of the ugly white wire you referenced. I got a bunch of clear sided storage bins and it's hugely helpful. Cool thing about it is dust and **** can't collect on the wire cuz it would fall through. It makes you put the stuff in the bins and because you can see whats in them you are constantly reminded that it exists. Really helps the motivation to not save a bunch of ****.

Very good point regarding the dust accumulation. And no offence intended on the white wire being unattractive. I'm sure it looks better than mine lol.

I actually came across some grey wire shelves at Lowes and though those would look pretty nice. How do you have them supported (bracket with rail or angle bracket to the wall stud)?

These are built with sliding hardware from closets. Cheap and easy.
The track acts like a hinge so I can peak under it without sliding it

I even added a bit of storage and lights underneath

Great timing as I need to add overhead shelves in my garage. I plan to make them large enough to accommodate some large totes.

I like the idea for the sliding doors.

I have a bunch of torn apart department store gondola pegboard and modular metal shelves on two sides. The top tier holds milk crates all the way across, not pretty but they hold a lot of stuff.

On the third side some 2x4 shelves that hang from the support beams from the attic floor. The 2x4 side is sized so large totes fit in the space. I also ran some EMT through the outer corner of the wood to use as a clamp hanger. Then I mounted fluorescent lamps long wise under the 2x4s. I plan on leaving the shelves open without doors so I can make the most of the space. Anything that I don't want to get dusty can go in a tote.

What did you use as the panels for the face of the cabinets? I think I'm gonna copy this concept.

I used a sheet of 3/8" OSB thinking it wouldn't curve and then wrapped it in .020 mill finish aluminum which is what we sell to window cappers. After a while the OSB in fact has a slight curve. I used it as a theme throughout the garage. I made some cabinets and because I actually made doors with sides and there was no warping. If you're interested in how I did it check out my link starting post 13.

I also have storage upstairs. All the parts from my projects, so the garage is not full of clutter.

Cabinets along back wall. Next plan is to make sliding door cabinets above these (handyman) for more concealed storage and to continue this all the way around. This will give me about another 50LF of cabinet space for things to get off the floor so should be a great improvement. My wife has been eating into my shop space with decorations which take up a space of 8'W x 2'D x 10'H. Got to use all of the extra height on the walls with cabinets.

Ok wow- this is awesome. I am now thinking a completely different direction. What is the construction of those cabinets?

Here's mine- I still need to add some facing, sliding doors and some paint but I'm happy with the outcome.

It Needs some minor trim and then some paint but I'm very happy with the outcome. This board has definitely guided me in my vision and I'm thankful for all the work others have contributed to the forum.

I built mine out of uni-strut
dazZu13l.jpg

Where in Ontario did you get uni strut accessories from?? I can only find the channels, but had to use mcmastercarr for misc items like square threaded washers. People look at me weird when I mention the stuff.

Looks very nice! I probably would have done the same if it weren't for the lack of availability.
