I would think hydraulic is thicker and less likely to leak past seals. I'd try the hydraulic first.

Hydraulic jack oil. I get mine at my local Ace hardware. HD probably stocks it, but I can't swear to it.

Go to your local Deere of Caterpiller construction dealer on get their hydraulic fluid, typically sold in 1, 2, 5 and 55 gallon containers. This is the good stuff that is specified as a working fluid and will not the will not breakdown.

I used it in power steering systems, car lifts and jacks without any problems.
