I bought this anvil about 30 years ago for no better reason than I wanted it. I told the tale of its purchase here already so won't repeat it now. I hardly ever used it, and it sat in a dark corner of the garage commiserating with my also seldom-used brake. Today, I needed to bend some sheet metal, so dug the brake out. In the years since I last used/looked at the anvil, I've done some reading, mostly here, and learned a thing or two. As I excavated my way to it, I became curious as to whether it had any markings. I had never even known to look for them until recently thanks the the GJ. I sort of remembered that it had a kind of slender, swoopy look, like ... no, I dare not say it.
So I pulled it out into the light and indeed found some markings. They're faint, rusted, but at least somewhat visible. I took the best pictures I could with oblique light, and they show up fairly well. So, what does the collective wisdom of the Garage Journal say? Is it? Could it be? Did I score and not even know it???
In addition to the Hardy and Pritchel holes, there are two holes down on the sides, one under the horn and one under the heel. They're something like 3 inches deep and tapered to a point, kind of like an obelisk. I've never seen holes like this - what are they? I weighed it at 135 lbs when I got it home, but if I'm reading the marks correctly, it's supposed to be 130. (112+18?) It measures 24 1/4" from heel to horn.
And I'm also curious as to the age of the beast. Any markings that may have been on the bottom are long gone. It's heavily rusted, and frankly the whole thing looks to me like it spent some time underground.
Any info will be greatly appreciated!
