3 times? 3 times per minute for me, I bet. Drum brakes are an abomination.
I envy the OP. If he didn't know what that was, he's probably lived a nice, easy life of pads and rotors.
This... wretched, awful design. "Oh, but they're self energizing!" Don't care, they're a PITA to work on, and nearly impossible to check without disassembling, which here in rustland often means the lip catches the shoes and breaks the hold down pins, yay!
I usually use needlenose visegrips grabbing in line with the pin, holds more secure and easier to see. At least the pins are better than the ones with the spring and bail for a hold down. Those are just awful.
