I bought some old tools and this was the only tool that I am not familiar with. Does anyone know what it is?

Now, how many of youse guys have one in their toolbox, like I do ?

Uncle Bob
I was given some old tools by coworkers back when I first moved to Phx. That was one of the tools. Didn't know what it was. Even when I work on drum brakes, I don't always use it.

you mean you dont need to use a small wrench and call in the help of 3 other hands to get that little spring and cap pressed in and turned while holding everything from the backside? wheres the fun in that?

Not true......I ALWAYS curse at least 3 times when doing drum brakes.

I agree i have almost every brake tool made for drum brakes and i still usually curse atleast once or twice. I have quite a few of those. My favorite and go to is the snap-on flip socket for brake hold downs that goes on a 1/4 drive nut driver.

3 times? 3 times per minute for me, I bet. Drum brakes are an abomination.

I envy the OP. If he didn't know what that was, he's probably lived a nice, easy life of pads and rotors.

This... wretched, awful design. "Oh, but they're self energizing!" Don't care, they're a PITA to work on, and nearly impossible to check without disassembling, which here in rustland often means the lip catches the shoes and breaks the hold down pins, yay!

I usually use needlenose visegrips grabbing in line with the pin, holds more secure and easier to see. At least the pins are better than the ones with the spring and bail for a hold down. Those are just awful.

I can't say I've worked on pads and rotors either. I've mostly worked on bicycles and projects around the house.
