I just changed a set of ignition points for the first time in “I don’t know how many” years.
I found a 1/4 inch baby craftsman wrench and a 5/16 from an old set.

That’s a good question. They’re incredible handy on R/C cars and other little odds & ends. I used mine awhile back working with tiny little nuts and screws in a collection of vintage bubble gum machines I bought at an estate sale.

Perhaps their primary use was for working on “ignitions”, and overtime people have worked less on ignitions and more on other things with them, so calling them midget wrenches sounded like a better fit? That’s just my opinion of what happened.

I’m curious to also know if anyone has a real answer.

The SAE ignition wrenches I have seen will be different sizes from end to end -

Midget wrenches will be the same size on both ends.

I finally got my paws on some combination ignition wrenches and you are absolutely correct! I compare a 9mm x 10mm ig. wrench vs. a 9mm midget wrench. The ig. wrench is little bit more stout. The open end is little bit shallower. The close end has a tiny bit more offset. Otherwise, they are really similar.1685894253920.png

Haven't seen any in several years but, ignition wrenches were also like mini angle wrenches wherein you would have a 90 degree open end on one side and a 15 degree open end on the other side.

Here are some I had out yesterday. -v- marked are on the right. Upper wrenches are ignition wrenches while the lower wrenches are mini combo wrenches. Some combos are all one size while others are two sizes. I had them out to compare to some very similar Wright wrenches I found in a roll.
