They're brake tools. For replacing drum brake springs and adjusting them.

Haha yeah I know that. I meant the tray cover thing. I guess as the other post said it is to write on.

Sorry, I misread it. The tray thing is to get in your way when you try to use that drawer. At least, that's what mine does.

Does it move? Is it a hinged lid? My wild-*** guess, based just on the picture, is that there's supposed to be a lock in that hole, and that's where you can store important paperwork that needs to be locked 24/7, so you can leave your box unlocked during the day but not give other people access to that paperwork.

Granted, that's just a random guess, but I seem to recall something similar on my Uncle's Mac/Matco (don't remember the exact brand but it starts with an M) box, and his had a lock and that's what he said it was for.

It doesn't lock. It's just a surface that will stay clear of clutter and give you a place to write on. Simple as that. Writing surface.

It is not hinged and doesn't lock. It just lays there and can be picked up and removed.

No problem. I have used those brake tools more times than I care to remember. I actually bought them in high school. Man I love disc brakes and I hope I never have to use them again. I always jack myself up with those darned springs.

Sounds like tjmonsen5 and WWheeler are right then, it's a writing tray that's just begging to be removed so you can make room for more tools without having to futz with it to get at the tools that would be under it.

I don't like my 'writing surface' either, took it out and stashed it under the big bottom drawer after wrapping it for protection.

I think they used to make them locking, or a different version that locked, or maybe a kit to make them lock.

For putting you wallet or whatever in. May not have been snap on, but I think it was/is.

I believe snap on did have at one time something that had a lock and it hinged so you could put stuff like your wallet inside and lock it while the box is unlocked. The one like yours is intended to be a writing surface as they know us mechanics and even if you have a large flat surface that is the top of your box, it isn't often that it is clear and clean to put things on to write on lol

I haven't used one of those writing surfaces since ever. Even when I had a top / bottom combo, I just used the workbench. I take it out when I get a new box and store it somewhere.

I also do have an old KR series top chest at home that has a small separately locking compartment where you might throw a wallet / keys.

Yes writing surface. Almost every box I have bought that has one, that drawer is used for storing paper work, tool receipts and misc small parts we all tend to collect after a job is over. I see lots of fuse, hardware and sensors in those drawers.

As far as the older boxes that had a locking compartment, I have heard them referred to as stash drawers,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,though i have no idea of what that means:lol_hitti

I like how Snapon puts all of these wacky features into boxes, most never get used. My KR1000 has a "secret" compartment under the top mat. Granted, I can't use it anyway due to the steel plate i use on the top, but its there!

That's the "mechanics desk" used to complete work orders or invoices, I've got a couple and they seem to be the junk drawer or paper work drawer.

If you're trying to convey what's wrong with a car on a work order, your pen is your most important tool. And you need a place to use it.

And your stash is your supply of weed, man. :lol_hitti
