What is this for?

A used tool near by has trays of sockets and I found this one. What is it for? It is a 16 mm 12 point craftsman deep socket #44421 made in USA "G". It has a plastic insert which is pinned in place. The 12 point end of the socket is ground a bit to the 12 points are square to the end and the exterior is beveled a bit. There is maybe 1/8" of depth of the points to grab anything. This was nicely fabricated, no extra grinding marks and seems to have had minimal use.

Well that's the ever elusive 16mm beveled edge pinned bush jam nut starter.

Starting a nut onto a bolt with a long reveal - longer than a shallow socket but shorter than a deep - you try to start it but the nut just slides up into the socket, doesn't bite. Too many obstructions to reach with your hand.
Think spark plug socket - rubber grip to hold plug

... or so it seems to me.

Are you sure about that? I don't know that I've ever seen any kind of panel mount knob that big. I usually use a pliers wrench on them, very carefully. It seems like even the big 100 watt pot I have only uses like an 8mm nut.

Oops - right, normal sizes are shaft 1/4", barrel 3/8, nut 1/2 (or mm equiv.) A quick peek in the boneyard- the only nuts in the 16mm neighborhood were for fuse holders, and since they go on the back, who cares?

Talk about an emotional rollercoaster. I was excited to have an answer which seems quite plausible in less time than it took me to type my question. Only to have it denied.

Based on this concept, I Google Bezel Nut and it assumed 16 mm.
