There are MANY cars that require the rear caliper pistons be rotated to retract them back into the caliper. These are cars that use the caliper as the e-brake as well. Just a quick example would be the GM Caddy Eldorado calipers 1976-1978 if memory serves me correctly.

not according to repair manuals......... i have not found one of them that requires turning them back

i just checked a 2013 Volvo XC60 T6 3.0L, L6, Asp T, VIN 90, Des B6304T4, 24V, USA/Canada on identifix and under "BRAKE PADS REAR (REAR WHEEL BRAKE, B6304T4, TF-80SC AWD) (512 REAR WHEEL BRAKE)" it says "Note!Make sure that the correct side of the tool (flat side) is facing the brake piston. The brake piston must be pushed in, not rotated" tell me which car needs a tool to turn the caliper

A lot of Audi cars need a 3pin and also have to be disabled/reset with a Vagcom or dealer computer via the OBD2 port.

maybe it's for resseting/tuning the hand brake... aka turning out not in.

My aunt's Dodge Journey did. Not this specific tool, but a 4 pronged one.

I don't think it's a 3 pin design, but later model Chrysler minivans need the calipers rotated back.

3 pin caliper brake wind tool. not 2 or 4 pin......

from what i have seen one youtube and tutorials, almost everything requires a computer, and the brake piston moves back in like the front without turning.

give me an example of which car needs this three pin tool and when to use it???......

I think you guys are missing the point of the tool itself. :wtf:

Currently many us own rear disc brake caliper kits with many adapters. Well, along comes Snap on, Cal Van, and others with these adjustable pin models. Two pin models are also available. These adjustable pucks allow you to live with fewer adapters.

http://www.cal-vantools.com/products/3-pin-brake-rewind-adapter/

Is it worth the price? That's up to you. I don't know. The single adjustable pin puck costs about what a traditional set runs. I don't know of any other advantage to this tool than reducing the amount of adapters you have :dunno:

lastly as a reminder, these tools are designed for rear disc brake calipers with the parking brake built into the caliper. They're not needed for every vehicle but, when you need them, you need them.

so which car needs it? i did research on a couple cars on the snap on list and all of the ones i searched up just presses back like a normal front caliper...........

heres what i found from another thread
http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=215328
Just wanted to update this thread for information purposes. I should have just used my regular pad compressor the first time instead of assuming they needed to be spun in because of the notches on the caliper. The calipers pushed in extremely easily, probably the easiest of any car I have worked on. Working on that Audi was a dream, everything aluminum, no rust. Nice and clean.

i needed to wind back a Nissan Altima. It had a cable running to the caliper with a spring loaded emergency brake. This style caliper is the ones that need to be wound back. I dont think any electronic parking brakes get wound, just pushed straight in. I could be completely wrong though, im not a professional.

yes from what i have seen in video and read. all of them says push back the piston like a normal front brake caliper

no. all video i have seen is push back the caliper like a normal front after u have told the computer to rest

My aunt's Dodge Journey did. Not this specific tool, but a 4 pronged one.
yes, i have done 2/4 prong ones without any problems. im trying to find what uses 3 prong....

Audis with EPB require you to cycle then retract the rear calipers via either the factory software or VCDS. Cranking them in with a windback tool will introduce you to the cost of replacing them.
yes, everything i have read says press them back like a front caliper. i have not found one that says to turn it in that uses 3 prong
